Sharing a few ideas for your next TJ’s trip. I like these products because they are:
✅ Convenient
✅ Relatively affordable
✅ Health-promoting

They also highlight how foods/meals can be both satisfying AND health-promoting, like sweet potato fries or fried rice with a variety of vegetables. Or a salad kit with chips inside 😎

Nutrition isn’t all or nothing.

Let’s talk about what makes grain bowls so great:

✅ There is no “right” way to make a grain bowl

✅ You can eat them hot OR cold

✅ They offer a more manageable way to incorporate new foods, whether that’s a grain or vegetable you’ve never tried before or a new type of dressing

✅ They provide a variety of health-promoting foods and nutrients

✅ The ingredients can be prepared in advance and literally thrown or placed in a bowl

✅ Leftovers: They can be enjoyed leftover / they can be made using leftover ingredients

✅ They don’t have to look pretty to be beautiful

Jeff reached out to me over the summer looking for support with meals and snacks. He discussed his history of dieting and restricting and expressed thinking about food just about all day.

Together, we worked to ensure that Jeff was eating enough food to support his body’s needs, and experimented with different meal and snack ideas that promoted more consistent nutrition, while aligning with Jeff’s individual preferences and goals.

Jeff is continuing to gain confidence around food and in his ability to nourish himself. He started out by committing to the one-month nutrition counseling package that I offer, and is continuing to utilize 1:1 nutrition counseling sessions in addition to messaging between sessions for additional support.

If you’re looking for a dietitian to support you with your food and nutrition-related goals, send me a DM and we can set up a free 15-minute call to make sure I’m the right fit for you.

Follow these steps to include sources of carb, color, protein and flavor to ensure your salad is satisfying/filling and genuinely enjoyable.

This is such an easy meal to throw together thanks to some convenient and affordable Trader Joe’s and Target finds.

has a line of different soup starters/broths which are really convenient for quick meals like this. I usually do about half broth/half water rather than only using the broth— just so I can get a couple meals out of it and reduce the sodium a bit.

I used instant noodles (without the flavoring packet) which are extremely affordable, provide quick energy and act as a base to add more fun and health-promoting ingredients, like these “ready veggies” and chicken cilantro mini wontons. The mini wontons are amazing, and there’s no easier way to add a variety of veggies to a meal.

Adequacy is the first priority in a health-promoting diet. Eating enough.

It’s more important than those cool fun rad new and not cheap herbal supplements. It’s more important than including vegetables at every single meal. Seriously.

Swipe to see some of the signs of not eating enough. These can happen if you’re eating ~75% or less of your overall needs over time.

If any of these signs stick out to you it is worth reaching out to a dietitian. I’d love to help you reach your nutrition goals in a safe and realistic way.

When you’re in the diet mindset, you’re made to feel that eating “non-diet” foods (and in many cases, foods that you actually like!) means you are breaking the rules; you’re cheating.

Maybe you follow a strict plan Monday through Friday, and then allow yourself to “cheat” during the weekend before starting over again on Monday. You feel like if you’re “good” all week, you can be “bad” on the weekend. I want you to know that eating foods that you enjoy on the weekend ISN’T “cheating.” It doesn’t make you “bad”- Just like eating a salad everyday doesn’t make you “good.”

I also want you to know that there’s a REASON why this pattern is happening. When you restrict your intake throughout the week and ignore your hunger and food cravings, those cravings only get stronger as the week rolls into the weekend, and you’ll be much more likely to feel out of control and eat beyond fullness.

Shifting away from this diet mindset is not easy, but it can happen. And when it does, you’ll be able to eat foods that you enjoy; foods that are rich in nutrients; foods that promote health; foods that feel good; foods that taste good. You’ll still enjoy food on the weekend, but you won’t feel out of control, because you know you can honor your cravings at any time throughout the week.

If you want more guidance and support with this, I welcome you to send me a message.

After a couple weeks she began to notice increased energy and improvements in her sport, and she became confident in her ability to honor her hunger and energy needs, and eat in a way that felt right for her.
