The WHO recognizes World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) November 18-24 every year. Data from 2019 found at least 1.27 million deaths around the globe are attributable to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) per year, with an additional 4.95 million associated with AMR. 1

Now more than ever, prioritizing and growing antimicrobial stewardship initiatives is necessarily for patient care and population health.

The National Faith HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NFHAAD) is observed each year on August 29. Faith plays a major role in the lives of many Americans, and this awareness day is intended to engage faith communities to work together to support HIV and AIDS education, prevention, treatment, and care to reduce and eliminate stigma and discrimination in their communities.

Since 2017 when NFHAAD was first observed, RAHMA (Reaching All HIV+ Muslims in America) and its partners have led the events of this awareness day across the nation, reaching over 200,000 people from the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, Hindu, and Baha’i communities across the U.S. to take a stand against stigma in their congregations and raise awareness on HIV.

In 2020, NFHAAD was officially recognized as an awareness day on HIV.gov. RAHMA celebrates this significant milestone and continues to address HIV stigma in all faith communities in this country.

The U.S. Government recognizes National Faith HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

WORLD WATER WEEK 2022! 💦💧🌊

World Water Week is an international, week-long, global conference that takes place in late August or early September, in Stockholm. Issues concerning freshwater are discussed on this day.

This week is also taken as an opportunity to discuss and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6); which is about clean water and sanitation for all. This year, World Water Week started on August 23 and will continue till September 1.

The theme for World Water Week 2022 is “Seeing the Unseen: The Value of Water." The theme will look at three main areas, which are, the value of water among people and for development; the value of water with respect to nature and climate change; and the economic and financial value of water.

There is a saying that goes: It takes a village to raise a child. Similarly, it takes a village to support a person in a humanitarian crisis. With record-high humanitarian needs around the world, this year’s World Humanitarian Day (WHD) builds on this metaphor of collective endeavour to grow global appreciation of humanitarian work.

Whenever and wherever people are in need, there are others who help them. They are the affected people themselves – always first to respond when disaster strikes – and a global community that supports them as they recover. Far from the spotlight and out of the headlines, they come together to ease suffering and bring hope.

The 2022 WHD campaign shines a light on the thousands of volunteers, professionals and crisis-affected people who deliver urgent health care, shelter, food, protection, water and much more.

What is severe acute malnutrition (severe wasting)?

Wasting, defined as low weight-for-height, is the most visible and lethal type of malnutrition. Secure acute malnutrition, is its most deadly form. It is caused by a lack of nutritious food and repeated bouts of diseases such as diarrhoea, measles and malaria, which compromise a child’s immunity.

How is it impacting children?

Severe wasting turns common childhood illnesses into killer diseases. Children who are severely malnourished succumb to those diseases because their bodies provide virtually no protection against the bacteria, virus or fungi that infect them. They die because their digestive systems can no longer absorb nutrients. A severely malnourished child is reduced to the most basic bodily functions. It takes all their energy just to keep breathing.

How many children are affected?

Globally, at least 13.6 million children under the age of 5 suffer from severe wasting, which is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths among children under age 5, making it one of the top threats to child survival. A severely malnourished child is up to 11 times more likely than a healthy child to die of common childhood illnesses such as pneumonia, the single largest infectious cause of death in children worldwide.

What are we calling for?

1) Governments to fully fund the Global Action Plan to scale up treatment on a massive scale, provide multi-year funding that will enable continuous services, and cover treatment for child wasting under health and long-term development funding.

2) Ensure that budget allocations to address the global hunger crisis include specific allocations for therapeutic food interventions to address the immediate needs of children suffering from severe malnutrition.

3) Governments to integrate wasting programmes as a central priority in national health systems and services and protect nutrition from budget cuts.

4) All stakeholders to prioritize treatment of child wasting as an essential child survival intervention and prioritize resources where they will save the most lives – severely malnourished children under age 2.
