What Does Blood Clot After Tooth Extraction Look Like?
After a tooth extraction, one of the most important parts of the healing process is the formation of a blood clot. This clot plays a vital role in protecting the underlying bone and nerves in the empty socket and is the body’s natural way of beginning the healing process. For patients in Boston, especially those passing through South Station, understanding what a healthy clot looks like can provide peace of mind.
A proper blood clot after tooth extraction typically appears as a dark red or purplish jelly-like mass within the socket. It forms within the first 24 hours and may look moist and dense. Over the next few days, the clot will stabilize and begin to be replaced with soft tissue that eventually turns into bone over time.
It’s important not to disturb this clot. Activities like spitting, drinking through a straw, or vigorous rinsing can dislodge it and lead to a painful condition called dry socket. Dry socket occurs when the blood clot either dissolves too early or is lost completely, exposing the bone and nerves beneath and delaying healing.
If the clot seems to be missing or you notice an empty-looking socket with severe pain, it's important to contact your dentist. Recognizing the difference between normal healing and complications is essential for recovery.
