CEASE study team members from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Brian Jenssen, MD, MSHP & Shannon Kelleher, MPH, discuss the benefits of using pediatric visits as an opportunity to promote smoking cessation amongst parents in this Penn Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics blog post. By utilizing motivational messages informed by behavioral science and modifying the child's electronic health record to automatically connect parents to smoking cessation treatments, these researchers are designing a powerful CEASE intervention to help more parents quit smoking.

This blog explores the ways in which pediatric settings can be used to support the health of parents and children by combatting to***co use.

San Diego Council passed the SAAFE Act last week, which will ban the sale of flavored to***co products in the city starting January 1st, 2023. This op-ed from Times of San Diego highlights research from CEASE’s Jonathan Winickoff, MD, who disputed claims that the ordinance would lead teens to smoke traditional ci******es instead.

If the City Council approves the SAAFE Act, an end to the sale of addictive flavored to***co products in San Diego will be within reach. That will be a relief for school districts, youth-serving organizations, health practitioners, and parents.

CEASE’s Jonathan Winickoff, MD and his team refuted a study from San Francisco claiming that e-cigarette flavor bans would lead to more teens smoking traditional ci******es. They found out that the data were collected before enforcement of the San Francisco flavor ban started, invalidating the result.

Although a study of San Francisco reported youth smoking increasing following a ban on flavored to***co sales in that city, a closer analysis indicates data on youth smoking were collected before the ban was enforced. The research team also examined data from Oakland, California, after a flavor ban....

A recent article from The Boston Globe featuring CEASE’s Jonathan Winickoff, MD describes why it is so difficult for teens to stop va**ng. Enforcing FDA guidelines, banning flavors, and lowering ni****ne concentrations in e-ci******es could all be helpful to both improve cessation among current users and lessen the chance that more students start va**ng.

Many teens are increasingly struggling with ni****ne addiction, largely from va**ng e-ci******es, scientists say.

A recent The New York Times article confirms that teen va**ng is still on the rise despite stricter regulations from the FDA.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and San Diego State University reveal a troubling reality: children can still be exposed to to***co smoke if they do not live with smokers. Even in the absence of secondhand smoke exposure, researchers found elevated ni****ne residue on children’s hands, likely lingering in homes from previous tenants. These results support stricter smoking protection measures in the children’s living environments, which would reduce thirdhand smoke exposure for both current and future tenants.

This cross-sectional study examines the prevalence of and income-related disparities associated with exposure to thirdhand smoke among children.
