MGH Center for Women's Mental Health

MGH Center for Women's Mental Health We invite you to visit our website at www.womensmentalhealth.org

The Ammon-Pinizzotto Center for Women’s Mental Health at MGH was established in 1989 and has been renamed following the generous gift from Carol Ammon and Dr. Marie Pinizzotto. Our website (www.womensmentalhealth.org) provides a range of current information including discussion of new research findings in women’s mental health and how such investigations inform day-to-day clinical practice. Despite the growing number of studies being conducted in women’s health, the clinical implications of such work are frequently controversial, leaving patients with questions regarding the most appropriate path to follow. Providing these resources to patients and their doctors so that individual clinical decisions can be made in a thoughtful and collaborative fashion dovetails with the mission of our Center.

“This experience was really a working relationship between me and my baby — my body, my baby. And it was different both times. It helped me realize there’s no comparison that’s actually helpful in these situations.” — Susie

🍼 Susie had a wonderful time breastfeeding her first child but found it more challenging the second time around while also caring for a toddler. She learned that every breastfeeding journey is unique and that the comparison only added unnecessary pressure.

This week’s So Glad You Asked highlight takes us back to Episode 6:
🍼“Everyone Has an Opinion: Is There a ‘Right’ Way to Feed My Baby?”

Certified Lactation Counselor and Full Spectrum Doula Desiree Cameron reminds us that infant feeding is about both mom and baby.

“I noticed that we kind of focused so much on the baby, not so much on the mother. Is the mother stressed? Is there a lot going on around them? How was their birth? Did they have a traumatic birth? Because that all can affect breast milk.” — Desiree Cameron

We know that postpartum depression and anxiety can recur, which is why planning ahead matters. Our Associate Director, Dr. Marlene Freeman, shares how collaborating with loved ones and healthcare providers before birth can reduce the risk of another episode.

🎤“We can grasp the opportunity to meet with the patient and a partner or other loved one to talk about how to plan for the postpartum ahead. … because, you know, as you know, it's impossible to really navigate the system and find a new therapist in the postpartum when you're so overwhelmed.” — Dr. Marlene Freeman
