Violinist and street performer Vivian Luo will be lacing up her shoes for Team Eye and Ear on April 20th as she takes on the 130th Boston Marathon.

Vivian’s journey to the starting line is especially meaningful. What began as irritation from a new pair of contact lenses in 2021 turned into a life-altering diagnosis of acanthamoeba keratitis—a rare and serious eye infection that can lead to blindness if left untreated.

Under the care of the Mass Eye and Ear cornea team, Vivian made a remarkable recovery. Today, she's back on the streets of Boston, performing for adoring crowds and training for her very first marathon.

Her story is a powerful testament to resilience, expert care and the impact of supporting lifesaving work. http://spklr.io/6183EJWIh

Jon Tuma has been by his daughter London’s side as her running partner since she was in kindergarten when he powered through a 5K with the flu because he didn’t want her to run alone.

Three years ago, Jon was diagnosed with Usher syndrome, a rare genetic condition with no cure that causes both hearing and vision loss. Everyday tasks like navigating stairs or recognizing faces in low light have become harder, reshaping how Jon moves through the world.

Now, London is lacing up to run the 2026 Boston Marathon in honor of her dad, raising funds to support groundbreaking Usher syndrome research at Mass Eye and Ear.

"Running has always been how my dad and I show up for each other, and this marathon is my way of honoring the love, strength, and perseverance he’s shown me," London says.

In our “Why I'm Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what's inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Experiencing headlight glare while driving at night? You’re not alone.

Simple adjustments, like avoiding direct eye contact with oncoming headlights and keeping your gaze slightly down and to the side, can help reduce that blinding effect and keep you safer on the road.

Daniel Liebman, MD, a member of the Glaucoma Service, weighs in on the AAA study with WCVB Channel 5 Boston.

Are you frustrated by bright headlights while you're driving at night? A new study suggests you're not alone.
