Join us for an afternoon with Lama Rod Owens as he explores what it means to become a spiritual warrior in our trying times.

From Broken Hearts to Spiritual Warriors
Saturday, November 15 | 2-4pm
Boston Shambhala Center

Lama Rod: Buddhist minister, author, activist, and self-described "Black Buddhist Southern Queen" invites us to let our hearts break open as fuel for transformation. Drawing from his book The New Saints, he offers a vision of liberated spiritual practice that speaks directly to our moment.

This is about leaning into what we habitually run away from. About seeing things as they really are. About bringing healing to our broken hearts and our beautiful, broken world.

“Systems of dominance have co-opted the work of goodness to keep people from disrupting systemic violence.” - Lama Rod Owens

The Shambhala view is that basic goodness is our foundation, and the foundation of our practice.

Lama Rod Owens invites us to take that goodness - both our tenderness and our toughness - and step into the path of the spiritual warrior. We can feel our broken hearts and engage with the world, disrupting systems of violence.

Human realm? Animal realm? Hell realm? Hungry Ghost realm? Demi-God realm? Where do you find yourself today?

The six realms are a traditional description of Samsara. Samsara isn't a distant myth, an esoteric philosophy. It's the endless, often frantic reality that we can't seem to step out of. Yet even in the whirlpool, there are openings to peace.

Join Kate King & Max Roberts-Zirker to explore:
- How samsara functions as a cycle of conditioned existence
- The six realms as mirrors for our inner and outer struggles
- How the sense of separateness fuels the whirlpool of suffering
- Practical ways to work with samsara as a path rather than a trap

Tomorrow we celebrate the Harvest of Peace, Shambhala's way of observing the Autumn Equinox.

This is not about pretending peace exists when it does not. This year, let’s consider: “what does it mean to harvest peace in a time of outrage, despair, and upheaval?” What can we cultivate together that is not just an escape, but a resource - something we can share, offer, and plant as seeds for a more wakeful future?

"I am the earth, even when I wake up crying..." *

Dr. Larry Ward passed away on August 19th, at his home in Rhode Island.

We are honored to have encountered this remarkable teacher, grateful for his reminders to step away from "flat-screen-consciousness" and to heal by "waking down" to the body, to the earth, and to deep connection. He offered two powerful programs in our "Friday Night Talks" series - "One Nation Under Trauma" in 2021 and "Take Me to the Water" in 2022.

He was a Senior teacher in Buddhist Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's Plum Village () tradition. He is the co-founder of the Lotus Institute () with his wife Peggy Rowe Ward, and the author of "America's Racial Karma: An Invitation to Heal", also with his wife Peggy Rowe Ward.

* The quote at the beginning is the opening line of a poem he read during a session of EcoSattva Training

Thank you, Dr. Ward.
