Vision screening and comprehensive eye exams are different.

Vision screenings are basic eye tests that help identify whether you have any problem with your vision, but does not test for eye diseases or underlying causes for any vision problem you may have. However, it does indicate whether you should get a comprehensive eye exam.

On the other hand, a comprehensive eye exam is performed by an eye doctor and will not involve thorough examination of all aspects of your vision. Your doctor will recommend a treatment plan customized to your individual needs. This includes: prescription lenses, eye exercises, eye drops, or ointment, and even surgery if the problem is serious.

For children 3 years and younger, their pediatrician will likely check the child's eyes for healthy eye development and look for most common childhood eye problems - lazy eye, cross-eyes, or misaligned eyes.

School-age children and adolescents can have their regular check ups as doctor recommends.

In general, if you are healthy and you have no symptoms of vision problems, Ophthalmologists recommends having a complete eye exam at age 40, when some vision changes and eye diseases are likely to start.

WHAT IS HIGH MYOPIA?
When myopia is severe, it is called high myopia. Myopia (nearsightedness) is a refractive error in which close objects look clear but distant objects appear blurred. High myopia typically stabilizes between the ages of 20-30 years old. It can usually be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, and sometimes refractive surgery.

SMOKING AND GRAVES’ DISEASE
In Graves’ disease or hyperthyroidism, the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to overproduce hormones. Graves’ disease affects muscles and tissue surrounding the eyes, causing eye and vision problems. These problems include eyelid retraction, eye protrusion, dry eye, vision changes, and eye bags. A person with Graves’ disease who smokes is at increased risk of making their disease worse.

SMOKING AND DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Smokers who have diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes in which long-term high blood sugar damages blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensing nerve tissue at the back of the eye. The damaged blood vessels can swell and leak; close and prevent blood flow; or grow abnormally.
