Tau is a protein found in the brain that serves many functions in healthy brain cells. In Alzheimer’s disease, an abnormal form of tau protein accumulates and creates thread-like structures called neurofibrillary tangles. These clumps prevent tau from doing its job and disrupt normal brain function.

Dementia is a general term describing a group of symptoms that includes memory loss, difficulty with language and communication, and problems with reasoning and thinking, which affect a person’s daily living. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Other causes include Lewy body dementia, Frontotemporal dementia, and Vascular dementia.
