Excited to see appear in today's New York Times on the topic of the increasing use of botulinum toxin injections in a younger patient demographic. This is perhaps the biggest trend we have seen over the past 5 years in our practice. Patients are coming for treatments at younger ages to forestall incipient signs of aging. Not limited to neuromodulator injections, patients are seeking energy-based devices such as lasers, injectables, chemical peels, topical therapies, and others. Without commenting on the propriety of this trend, there is little doubt these treatments are safe and effective in skilled hands. The key is a realistic clinical assessment at consultation, along with honest discussion about the risks and benefits of these procedures. Finally, it is important to counsel patients in a straightforward manner and refuse inappropriate and unnecessary cosmetic treatments.
