Mindful eating isn’t always about picking the "healthiest" option. It's also about making choices that align with your goals and circumstances.

Choosing a grilled chicken salad is perfect if you’re aiming to stay on track with your health goals and enjoy a nutritious meal. 🥗

But guess what? It’s also mindful to indulge in your favorite pasta dish when you’re celebrating a special moment! 🍝 Balance is key.

Remember, mindful eating is about being present and making conscious decisions that make you feel good. Whether you’re opting for a healthy salad or treating yourself to some pasta, go for what feels right for you in the moment.

What’s your favorite mindful eating choice? Let me know in the comments!

This lesson hit home for me in a way I could never have imagined. A few years ago, my father needed a kidney transplant, and I was a match. Donating one of my kidneys to him was one of the most challenging yet rewarding decisions of my life.

This experience changed my life and underscored the importance of taking care of ourselves and making mindful choices every day.

Every small, positive choice we make today is an investment in our future. Staying active, eating nutritious foods, and caring for our bodies aren’t just acts of self-love; they’re acts of love for the people we care about, too.

Isn't it something how most of us feel less than thrilled with our bodies? It's those beauty standards – slim for women, muscular for men – that set the bar. Many of us struggle to see ourselves fitting these ideals, leading to body image issues.

I found this study in 'Appetite' that connects body image with eating habits. It's all about understanding why body image woes can lead to eating disorders. The findings? A mix of body perceptions tied to habits like skipping meals or overeating.

Interestingly, women often face tougher body image challenges due to societal expectations, while men, even with a generally positive body image, might obsess over maintaining their looks. And get this – a higher BMI doesn't automatically mean a negative body image.

As a coach, I see body image as deeply personal. Both men and women can struggle, and a negative self-view can lead to unhealthy eating patterns. The key is to stay vigilant and seek help if needed.

The takeaway? Don't judge a book by its cover. Someone with an 'ideal' body might be struggling, while someone else could be totally at peace with their appearance. It’s all about understanding and empathy.

In short, body image and eating habits are about our inner world. It's crucial to be kind, curious, and embrace our journey of self-discovery. That's the heart of dealing with body image issues effectively.

As the holiday season unfolds, it brings with it a wave of celebrations and gatherings. Amidst the joy and cheer, it's often challenging to maintain our fitness and health goals, particularly when navigating the world of festive drinks.

I'm here to arm you with key tips and strategies to enjoy this festive season without sidelining your fitness objectives.

1. Choose Lower Calorie Drinks: Opt for drinks with fewer calories, like light beers or wine spritzers, instead of heavy cocktails.
2. Avoid Drinking on an Empty Stomach: Eating a healthy meal before drinking can slow the absorption of alcohol and reduce cravings for high-calorie foods.
3. Hydration Between Drinks: Having a glass of water between each alcoholic drink to stay hydrated and limit alcohol consumption.
4. Mocktails as Alternatives: Try out some festive mocktail recipes - they're delicious, alcohol-free, and won't derail your fitness progress.
5. Set a personal limit - this is self-explanatory!
6. Navigating Social Pressure: Politely decline drinks and keep your fitness journey on track through the holiday cheer.

Consider 'who you are' as your current self in your life and fitness journey. Whether you're just starting, finding your way back, or moving steadily, it's all part of the journey. Now, envision 'who you want to be'—a fitter, healthier, more confident you, or achieving a specific goal. This vision guides your path.

The real change comes from 'what you decide to do each day'. It's not about big, dramatic actions but the small, daily choices. Opting for a salad, taking the stairs, going for a walk, or resting when needed—these small decisions shape your journey from 'who you are' to 'who you want to be'.

Progress in fitness and life isn't linear. There will be setbacks, but every choice, every healthy meal or workout, every act of self-care, builds towards your ideal self. Each time you're making a choice, reflect: Does this bring me closer to who I aspire to be? Remember, every step counts.

🌟 If this resonated with you, don't keep it to yourself! Spread the positivity and motivation by sharing it with the world.

Melatonin is renowned for its sleep-enhancing properties, particularly useful for managing jet lag or adapting to shift work schedules. However, its benefits extend beyond just sleep regulation. Melatonin also functions as a potent antioxidant, safeguarding our skin against UV damage, combating free radicals, and contributing to gut health and brain functionality. Additionally, it may assist in reducing inflammation and managing cholesterol levels.

As we age, our natural melatonin production declines. External factors, such as exposure to light and inconsistent sleep patterns, can further disrupt melatonin levels. While supplementation is an option, it isn't always the ideal solution. In some cases, inadequate melatonin levels may simply stem from insufficient exposure to darkness, akin to how low vitamin D levels can result from a lack of sunlight.

However, caution is advised when considering high-dose melatonin supplements, as they can be misleading and potentially harmful. For sleep improvement, smaller doses are generally more effective. Emphasizing lifestyle modifications should be the primary approach. Practices like ensuring ample darkness at bedtime, minimizing blue light exposure before sleep, and maintaining a balanced diet can significantly enhance sleep quality.

Therefore, while melatonin is currently receiving significant attention, it should be viewed as a complementary element in our health regimen. The real key to improved sleep and overall well-being lies in daily lifestyle choices that foster healthier sleep patterns.

The saying, “You can’t out-exercise a bad diet,” hints at a crucial fitness truth, but there's more beneath the surface. It's not just about offsetting calorie intake with exercise; it involves a deeper understanding of our overall lifestyle.

Recent research introduces the “compensatory effect,” where individuals consume more calories or reduce activity post-exercise. This challenges the view of exercise solely as calorie-burning, highlighting the psychological and physiological effects on overall activity.

The focus is on non-exercise physical activity (NEPA) - the movements outside structured workouts. Studies show that exercise can lead to reduced activity for the rest of the day, shifting the focus from just calorie burn to overall daily movement.

The psychological response to exercise also impacts behavior. Post-workout feelings influence food choices and activity levels. Understanding and aligning exercise with personal goals and emotional responses is crucial.

The key to fitness success is balancing structured exercise and daily movement. It's about how workouts affect overall activity patterns. By finding the balance where exercise enhances daily movement, one can unlock true fitness potential.

A holistic approach to health, where exercise and daily activities complement each other, is essential for a successful wellness journey. Fitness is not just about gym time but also about integrating workouts with lifestyle choices.

My Story

Jeremy Colon is a certified personal trainer, level 1 USA Weightlifting coach, sports performance coach, sports nutritionist, life coach, and founder of Jeremy Colon Enterprises and Second Chance Fitness. Jeremy does one on one personal training as well as group group fitness. Book your first session here!

On July 31st, 2013, I underwent a kidney transplant surgery where he donated his kidney to his sick father, who was on the verge of death! Since then, life has changed. It was after that moment that I pushed myself to commit more to my health, as well as being in service of others who struggle with theirs.

On November 5th, 2017, I successfully completed the TCS NYC Marathon for Team For Kids which is a group of committed runners who raise funds for New York Road Runners' Youth and Community Services programs while training for major endurance events. I raised $2,620 where the funds provided free or low-cost health and fitness programs to kids who would otherwise have little or no access to regular physical fitness.

On April 16, 2018, I successfully raised over $10,000 as finished the 2018 Boston Marathon for Casa Myrna which offers support services and shelter to Domestic Violence Survivors.
