We are saddened to announce the passing of Susan Wayne, founder of Doc Wayne and tireless advocate for human services in Massachusetts. Susan founded the Doc Wayne Athletic League in 2002 as a program of Justice Resource Institute (JRI) in memory of her brother, Eli "Doc" Wayne, and his belief in the power of sport for positive youth development. Thanks to Susan's efforts and advocacy, Doc Wayne has grown to impact over a million youth and adults worldwide.
"Susan Wayne was an icon in the field of human services and its transformation from state-run institutions to community-based services," said Joesph M. Leavey, founder of Communities for People and board member of Doc Wayne. "She developed Justice Resource Institute into one of the top agencies in the country. She was a strong voice for the Mass Council of Human Service Providers, the Children's League of Massachusetts, and all children services.
"Her motivating spirit was her care for kids, and she was always proud of the program she started and named after her brother Doc Wayne. She stressed that this was a program that would use sports as a way to work with kids and help them live a more normalized life. Through a lot of hard work with some excellent staff, Doc Wayne continues to be very effective. She was a wonderful friend and a great loss to the entire human services community."
