Ricardo came to BIDMC hoping to donate a kidney directly to his daughter. When testing showed they weren’t a match, he chose to be the first patient from our living donor program to participate in the paired exchange program. Doing so, Ricardo helped another patient across the country receive a life-saving transplant while ensuring his daughter could receive a compatible kidney in return.

His courage and compassion embody the true power of living donation. ❤️

“As a nurse, it’s been an honor to witness Ricardo’s strength and generosity,” says Living Donor Coordinator Rachel Parker, RN. “He holds a special place in all of our hearts.”

Life after donating a kidney can be full of joy and purpose. 💚

Doug became a grandfather seven years ago, something he once wasn’t sure he’d live to see. Today, he spends his days working at his local gym, reading, and playing with his grandsons.

He says one of the greatest rewards of being a living donor is the lifelong friendship he formed with Jack and Adele—and knowing his kidney is still helping Jack live a healthy, active life.

A few weeks after his kidney transplant, Jack met his donor, and he calls it the greatest moment of his life.

Doug selflessly gave a kidney without knowing who it would go to, and that act of generosity gave Jack nearly 15 extra years filled with family, friendship, and gratitude.

Jack says he owes everything to Doug—and to Adele, whose decision to become a living donor set it all in motion. He’ll never forget the gifts that made his life possible.

Mary, a 27-year-old with metastatic colorectal cancer, was referred from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for a groundbreaking living donor liver transplant — part of our new program for patients with this type of cancer.

When Mary learned she would need a liver transplant, she shared the donor application with her family — and 30 relatives volunteered to be tested. Her Aunt Theresa turned out to be the perfect match and courageously stepped forward as her donor.

This milestone represents the power of family, innovation, and collaboration between Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and BIDMC, offering new hope to patients facing the most complex cancers.

Doug Robertson, from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, had never considered living organ donation—until one moment changed everything. After watching a story on the news about a cab driver who donated a kidney to his passenger, Doug was inspired to see if he could do the same.

As he began learning more, Doug joined a website called Living Donors Online, where he met a woman named Adele. She was hoping to donate a kidney to her husband, Jack—but they were not a match. All three ended up as a paired kidney exchange, where Doug’s kidney went to Jack, and Adele’s donation helped another patient in need.

Before the surgeries, Doug and Adele connected online. What began as a message between two strangers grew into a friendship built on courage, generosity, and shared purpose.

Their story is proof that the simple act of saying “yes” to donation can ripple far beyond one person—creating new life, and lifelong bonds.
