A major step forward for bone health 🦴

A landmark FDA decision—shaped by a decade of research led by Mary Bouxsein, PhD, at BIDMC—could dramatically speed the development of new osteoporosis therapies. By recognizing bone mineral density as a valid clinical trial endpoint, researchers can now bring effective treatments to patients faster, with smaller and more efficient studies.

Read how this could transform care for a common, underdiagnosed, and undertreated condition. 👇

BIDMC investigator Mary Bouxsein helped secure FDA approval of bone density imaging as a faster endpoint for osteoporosis drug trials. Read more.

Leaders from BILH and BIDMC recently joined City of Quincy and Massachusetts elected officials, as well as project leads from
Consigli Construction Co., Inc. and FoxRock Properties, to celebrate the structural steel “topping off” of the Beth Israel Lahey Health Care Center - Quincy.

The 100,000 square foot multi-specialty ambulatory center will provide comprehensive healthcare services, including primary care, urgent care, a full suite of diagnostic radiology services, lab services and a retail pharmacy. Specialty services offered at the center will include cardiology, OBGYN, cancer care, orthopedics, podiatry, gastroenterology, and more.

Slated to open in 2027, the facility is under construction at 55 General McConville Way in Quincy Center, adjacent to a new parking garage and just a short walk from the Quincy Center T-stop.

BILH’s inaugural Sustainability Summit brought colleagues together across the system to celebrate and strengthen our commitment to environmental stewardship. 🌱

Congratulations to Katelyn Trainor, RN, Dana Pepe, MD, Conceicao Pires from BIDMC HemOnc BMT & Infection Control, and Paige Dzenutis, MIT student — who were recognized as Jane Matlaw Environmental Champion Awardees for streamlining supply shelves in bone marrow transplant unit rooms.

By stocking only frequently used items, this project reduced excess inventory, saved $1,279 monthly, eliminated 4,643 disposable supplies, and significantly lowered waste — all while maintaining strict infection control standards.

Thank you all for your leadership and dedication to sustainability!

Heading into the holidays and feeling short on sleep? 😴 In a recent article, Tony Cunningham, PhD, clinical psychologist at BIDMC's Center for Sleep and Cognition, explains why sleep quality matters just as much as sleep quantity — and how understanding your body’s sleep pressure and circadian rhythm can help you rest better.

From finding your true sleep needs to building a healthier routine during a busy season, Dr. Cunningham shares practical insights to help you wake up feeling restored.

A sleep scientist advises against blindly following the eight-hour sleep rule. Instead, you should create a routine to find your optimal sleep time.

Emily Moss is running the 2026 Boston Marathon® presented by Bank of America as part of Team BILH in support of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) to give back to the hospital that saved her life. Born prematurely at just over two pounds, Emily spent her first 10 weeks of life in the Klarman Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where the extraordinary care she received helped her grow into a strong, active adult. Fitness has been an anchor throughout life. Whether teaching Pilates, running in a 200-mile midnight Ragnar relay, or training for a marathon, Emily channels her resilience into every challenge.

She hopes that by running she will inspire families currently in the NICU, showing them that even the tiniest beginnings can lead to remarkable journeys.

A milestone moment for the Klarman Family NICU at BIDMC.💙

This first-ever multidisciplinary NICU simulation brought neonatologists, NNPs, nurses, respiratory therapists, Simulation Lab partners, and unit leadership together for realistic, high-fidelity emergency training—side by side, as one team.

By practicing high-risk, low-frequency scenarios together, we strengthened communication, clarified roles, improved workflows, and built confidence where seconds matter most. Families may never see these simulations, but they benefit every day from a NICU team that trains intentionally and is always ready to deliver the safest, most coordinated care.
