Veterans deployed in the post-9/11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn) face a multitude of challenges reintegrating into civilian life after military service. There is a need for evidence-based support programs to address the wide-reaching cognitive, psychological, and physical symptoms that can impede civilian reintegration. This study indicated that online, group-based, reintegration-focused interventions facilitate beneficial social connections among veterans. Veterans enrolled in STEP-Home reported learning more practical problem-solving and emotional regulation skills and were more open to accessing other Veterans Health Administration care after treatment completion than veterans in the control group. Results emphasize the opportunity for group and skills-based interventions focused on reintegration to increase social support, enhance practical emotional regulation skills, and promote Veterans Health Administration care among veterans. The Translational Research Center for TBI and Stress Disorders (TRACTS) at VA Boston recently celebrated the 10 year anniversary of repeated research with one of their patients, David Ransom.

TRACTS is a RR&D National Center for TBI Research focused on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD) in Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans. TBI is a very common injury in the OEF/OIF conflicts, and TBI can lead to a number of physical, cognitive, and emotional problems for Veterans.

Research & Development National Center for TBI Research will ultimately help VA develop more helpful treatments for returning Veterans. TRACTS studies have been carefully designed to understand the complex changes in the brain, thinking, and psychological well-being that result from TBI and PTSD. These studies will lead to more understanding and better treatment options returning Veterans with TBI and PTSD.

TRACTS staff come from all parts of the VA Healthcare System (from mental health, neuropsychology, neuroscience, and medicine) and its focus is on the OEF/OIF Veteran population and their unique characteristics and experiences. Many returning Veterans report feeling more “understood” by the TRACTS research team, due to our proven dedication and respect for returning Veterans.
