✨ Mindfulness as a Rhythm 🥁

When I left for the monastery, I needed to drinking coffee while I was away. They don’t offer much caffeine on retreat, and I’ve learned that it’s not worth pretending I don’t drink coffee for a week or a weekend (cue headaches!). Bringing coffee was my version of a .

We had a pour-over set that someone gave us as a wedding present, and though I had never used it, I took it with me anyway. Each night, I would hand-grind my beans so that in the morning, all I needed to do was boil the water. Before meditating at 6 a.m., I’d make my cup of pour-over and enjoy it on my mindful walk to the meditation hall. Swipe to see my floor setup!

This ritual of drinking coffee—pour-over style—has become an essential part of my morning routine. There is something that feels so wholesome about making my coffee so mindfully. It sets the and tone for my whole day.

All Things Flow 🍂

Seasons remind us of the passage of time—they slowly arrive, peak, and eventually pass. When assessing where we are at the start of goal setting, we may not always like what we find. But just like a season, this difficulty will pass. The next season is an opportunity to cultivate positive change.

Soaring to new heights 🚀

Ever feel ready to recommit to a goal but have no idea where to start? It’s like knowing your destination but not the route to get there. When we’re ready to make a change, it’s natural to focus on the destination. But to chart the most effective path forward, we must first pause and honestly assess (and accept!) where we are.

For example, when I recently observed my own exercise habits, I noticed I wasn’t doing it as frequently as I wished. I also learned I didn’t enjoy the activities I was choosing. With that information, I was able to work on finding more time in my schedule and identifying new exercise classes to try (reformer pilates!).

Assessing and accepting where we are is like finding our specific coordinates on a map. Knowing our exact location is so important for finding the next step. It also allows us to track EVERY step of progress along the way. ✨

What goal are you working towards? What are you observing?

Pulling back to launch forward ✨

Often it's our own perfectionistic standards that lead us to all that negative mental chatter about improvements we are making in our lives. When we choose to give just 70% effort – enough to steadily make gains while leaving plenty of room for mistakes – we can often find momentum and begin to gain confidence in ourselves.

I try to move my body everyday, and I was noticing a lot of guilt on days when I wasn’t able to exercise. I felt really down on myself! Then, I reminded myself about giving 70% effort, and instead of expecting exercise every day, I instead can expect myself to exercise every day, 70% of the time (so about 5/7 days a week or more days than not!). Suddenly, I was reaching my goal. Week after week. It was invigorating and made me want to exercise more. The kindness snowballed on itself.

70% effort is like a comfortable outstretched hand: one that is not overly tense yet not weak and without shape.

It’s in pulling back (on our effort) that we launch forward (with our goals).

What will you accomplish with 70% effort? Share with us below!
