🌟 What a day at Healthy Kids Day! 🌟
We had the BEST time joining the Needham YMCA’s national celebration of kids’ and family health and wellness! For over 30 years, YMCAs across the country have been bringing communities together with free events like this one — inspiring kids and families to keep their minds and bodies active all summer long and beyond. 💛

We loved every moment — from seeing our tiniest fans in their Elliott jerseys 👕 to sharing some water with our favorite four-legged community members 🐾🐶

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to say hello — your smiles made our day! Here’s to healthy, happy, active families all summer long! ☀️

We are SO proud of you both. Here’s to sore legs and well-earned rest days! 💙💛💙💛

"The Long Run is King, but Speed Work is Queen." 👑👟

As we get deeper into marathon season, Tip #5 is all about the balance of power in your training plan. While those double-digit weekend miles at Castle Island are essential for building your cardiovascular "bank account," adding speed and strength work is what keeps you out of the clinic and on the road.

Why we advocate for a balanced "Court":

👑 The King (Long Run): This is your structural foundation. It adapts your ligaments and tendons to the repetitive stress of 26.2 miles.

👑 The Queen (Speed Work): Track sessions or intervals aren't just for "fast" runners. They improve your metabolic efficiency and help you maintain better form when fatigue sets in.

👑 The Support (Strength Training): We can’t emphasize this enough—loading your muscles is the best way to protect your bone health and prevent overuse injuries.

At Elliott Physical Therapy, our South Boston team (made up of many marathoners themselves!) knows that a one-size-fits-all plan doesn't work. Your training should reflect your life, your abilities, and your specific finish-line goals.

Need a tune-up for your speed or a strategy for your strength? 📞 Call us at 781-896-7005 to schedule a consultation at our Old Colony Ave clinic!

When it comes to the marathon, your fuel is just as important as your training plan.

Without a strategic plan, your body can’t maintain the energy required for 26.2 miles, especially when training in the cold, windy Boston elements. Proper fueling doesn't just prevent "hitting the wall"—it protects your muscles and joints from the fatigue that leads to form breakdown and injury.

Best Practices:
🔋 Training for your Gut: Your digestive system needs to be trained just like your legs. Use your long runs now to test specific gels and electrolytes so there are no surprises on race day.

🔋Maintain the Engine: Consuming carbohydrates consistently manages your energy levels and prevents the "brain fog" that can set in during the final miles.

🔋Recovery Starts Mid-Race: Proper hydration and fueling during the run help manage your heart rate and set the stage for better muscle recovery afterward.

We understand that marathon success is built on a foundation of strength, movement, and smart preparation. Give us a call if you're looking for some support in your final month training for Boston 2026!

👋 Meet Rori Smith, a powerhouse marathoner who conquered both the Boston and Chicago marathons last year!

She’s sharing how personalized preparation, and working with the team at Elliott PT made all the difference in her journey to the finish line.

Check out more of Rori's story below! 🏅👟

"I became more into distance running in college as a way to stay active since I no longer participated in organized team sports. In 2025, I ran my first and second marathons, participating in the Boston Marathon in April and the Chicago Marathon in October. I had been increasing my distance over the past years, running the Newport and BAA Half Marathons, and viewed a marathon as a new personal goal. I also ran both races for charity and was able to fundraise for two incredible organizations, DetecTogether and the Danny Did Foundation.

I started physical therapy during my Boston Marathon training for help treating some pain in my hamstrings and calves. I knew I was taking on significant distances compared to my previous running experience, which came with some aches and pains; however, I wanted to ensure I was able to complete the majority of my training runs and arrive healthy at the start line. Eric Cardin at Elliott Physical Therapy listened to the issues I was experiencing and was able to diagnose and treat them. He recommended reverting to lower support insoles in my sneakers to help with my calf pains and gave me exercises to work on my strength. As we got closer to the marathon, he treated my calves and hamstrings to help loosen muscle tightness.

He also developed a strength training plan for me between my Boston and Chicago training blocks to get stronger and help reduce future injuries. As a fellow runner, Eric also shared tips and tricks from his marathon experience, which helped ease my nerves. I truly could not have made it to the finish line of either marathon without Eric and Elliott!"

Is your "Paddy’s Day" spirit stronger than your wrist? 🇮🇪🍺

We know the feeling! If carrying those festive pints has your hands or wrists feeling less than lucky, it might be time to see a specialist. We are proud to have Rebecca Wolongevicz, MS, OTR/L, CHT, on our team at Elliott Physical Therapy in Hanover.

As a Certified Hand Therapist and Occupational Therapist, Rebecca specializes in the complex mechanics from your fingertips to your shoulder. And let’s be honest—after the Blizzard of ’26 dumped 3+ feet of snow on the South Shore, most of our hands and shoulders are feeling the "shoveling struggle." ❄️🏠

Why see a CHT like Rebecca?

🟢 Specialized Expertise: Hand therapy is medicine for everything from ligament strains to post-op recovery.

🟢 Blizzard Recovery: If shoveling that mountain of snow left you with tingling, numbness, or shoulder pain, Rebecca can create a custom plan to get you back to 100%.

🟢 Functional Goals: We focus on getting you back to the activities you love (even if that’s just holding a coffee—or a pint! 😉).

Don't just push through the pain! Whether it was the snow or the celebration that got you, Rebecca is ready to help.

When it comes to the marathon, Tip #3 is all about your end goal.

Are you training to beat a specific time, or is your mission simply to cross that finish line healthy and strong?

Knowing your goal is the first step, but creating a training plan that actually works with your life, your abilities, and your commitment level is what gets you to Boylston Street.

Why a Personalized Plan is Key:

✔️ Sustainability: A plan you can’t fit into your Southie lifestyle is a plan you won't finish.

✔️ Injury Prevention: Your "Movement Prescription" needs to load your muscles and bones correctly based on your specific goal pace and volume.

✔️ Mental Clarity: Knowing exactly what you need to do each day reduces the "marathon panic" when life gets in the way.

Our South Boston team on Old Colony Ave is made up of runners who have personally helped over 20 people cross the finish line last year alone. We don't just treat injuries; we help you build the strategy to avoid them.

Ready to build a plan that works for YOU? 📞 Call us at 781-896-7005 or DM us to schedule a consultation today!

In honor of it being marathon training season, we want to highlight some of the amazing marathoners that we worked with last year, helping them reach their goals. 👟 🏅

Our first runner is Ashlie, and here is her story:

"I started running cross country in high school and ran on and off in college, mostly just for fun. After I moved to Boston, I kept running casually, and in 2023 I signed up for my first half marathon. I followed a training plan I found online and honestly didn’t really know much about pacing, different types of runs, or nutrition. When I finished the race, I said I was never running another one again because it was so hard and miserable.

Clearly that didn’t stick, because since then I’ve run three more half marathons and one full marathon. Running also became more meaningful to me when I applied to run with the Finish MS team at the Chicago Marathon to raise money for multiple sclerosis. I didn’t think I’d get accepted, but I did. I chose Finish MS because when I originally signed up for my first half marathon, I was supposed to run it with my brother. Halfway through our training, he was diagnosed with MS and couldn’t run the race. He continues to deal with MS every day, so being able to run and raise money for a cause that directly affects my family means a lot to me. I’ll be running Chicago 2026 and fundraising for MS again.

I don’t have many friends who run, so most of my training advice came from Google. My knees had always bothered me after races, but once I started training consistently for Chicago, the pain got worse. During one long run, around mile 11 of 14, I had to stop short for a car and ended up jamming my knee so badly that I couldn’t finish the run. That’s when I finally made an appointment at Elliott [Physical Therapy] in Southie.

I started working with Matt Watson, who then connected me with Eric [Cardin]. Working with Eric completely changed how I approach running. He helped me redo my training plan, taught me how to pace properly, and helped me understand nutrition and hydration. I honestly don’t think I would have run nearly as well without his help.

I continued seeing Matt throughout my training, and he made a huge difference with my knees and hips. After a few weeks, I had little to no pain. He also helped a lot with recovery, especially after long runs. I’d usually come straight to PT after a long run, and the techniques he used helped me recover so much faster. I went from barely being able to walk for days to just feeling a little sore.

Matt and Eric completely changed my experience with running. I’m training for Chicago 2026 and plan to keep working with them throughout the process."

We hope you find her story as inspirational as we do.

Getting ready to conquer 26.2 miles in 2026? 🏃‍♀️

If you’re out crushing miles on the streets or at a local park, we have one word for you: SLOW.

It sounds counterintuitive, but if you want to cross that finish line on Boylston Street feeling strong, you need to master the art of the "conversational pace." Here’s why your friendly neighborhood PTs at Elliott want you to dial it back:

Why Slow = Pro 🧠
Build Your Armor: Running at a slower pace early in your training gives your muscles and tendons the time they actually need to adapt to the impact.

Fuel Efficiency: It teaches your body to burn fat for fuel more efficiently—which is a total game-changer when you hit the dreaded "wall" late in the race.

Cardiac Gains: You’re stimulating vital heart adaptations that only happen when you aren't redlining it.

The "Vibe Check" Test 🗣️
How do you know if you're going slow enough? If you can’t gossip with your running buddy about the latest friend-group drama without gasping for air, you’re going too fast.

Ideally, you want to stay in Zone 2 (about 60-70% of your max heart rate). If you can hold a full conversation, you’re doing it right!

This is just the beginning! We’ll be sharing more expert tips in our Marathon Training Series to make sure everyone prepping for the Boston Marathon and beyond in 2026 stays injury-free and ready to rock.

What's your favorite route for a "conversational" long run? Let us know in the comments! 👇
