Boston Medical Center, a proud member of the Boston Medical Center Health System, models a new kind of excellence in healthcare, where innovative and equitable care empowers all patients to thrive. We combine world-class clinicians and cutting-edge treatments with compassionate, quality care that extends beyond our walls. Together, we're reimagining healthcare for Boston—and the world. As an award-winning health equity leader, our diverse clinicians and staff interrogate racial disparities in care and partner with our community to dismantle systemic inequities. This commitment to equity is the basis of all our work, particularly as 70 percent of our patients are people of color. Nearly 30 percent of our patients speak a primary language other than English, and we offer all our care and services in over 160 languages, including Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, and more. As an academic medical center, BMC is building the future of healthcare. Our world-renowned researchers currently oversee over 660 research projects in a wide variety of areas, and as the principal teaching affiliate of Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, BMC is devoted to training future generations of healthcare professionals. BMC's clinical expertise, commitment to equity, quality, and sustainability efforts have been consistently recognized by organizations across the country, including the federal government, American Nurses Credentialing Center (Magnet designation), U.S. News, Leapfrog, Human Rights Campaign, the Lown Institute, Becker’s Healthcare, and more. Today is Boston Marathon Giving Day. Thanks to Bank of America, Team BMC runners like Zeke (pictured) have the chance to boost their fundraising to support life-changing BMC programs. You can help them. Support Team BMC: https://bit.ly/4qnRgDK

BMC anesthesia resident Ezequiel (Zeke) Rodriguez will be running the Boston Marathon with Team BMC on Monday, April 20. He was inspired to join after learning that two of his colleagues ran for BMC in 2025. “If it were not for BMC, a lot of our patients would not get the care they need. So, any money people donate to BMC goes a very long way. I also want to empower people to donate, not just for this race, this one time, but to look for other ways they might get involved. It really makes a big difference,” Zeke shares.

Meet David, a longtime Mattapan resident whose life changed in an instant when what started as a normal day at work turned into a heart attack he didn't even recognize at first.

David first joined the HEART of Communities program to address his stress and blood pressure, but he also learned to not race ahead and to build healthy habits with purpose during the process. Much like driving in Boston traffic, David now understands that sometimes slowing down is how we move forward.

A collaboration between Boston Medical Center, Mass General Brigham, and Mattapan Community Health Center, HEART of Communities is here to help manage diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity in Mattapan.

The earlier substance use begins, the higher the risk for long-term consequences. That’s why adolescence is such an important time to start the conversation.

Sarah Bagley, MD, MSc, medical director of the Center for Addiction Treatment for Adolescents/Young Adults Who Use Substances (CATALYST) and director of BMC's Youth Advocacy and Research Collaborative, shares her research centering youth voices to help strengthen their mental health and build healthier futures for the next generation.

Camille Ames always knew she had a heart murmur — it had been diagnosed as a child. But when she started having symptoms in late 2023, she became concerned. “I’m a nurse, and I could hear the murmur getting louder,” she says. “I also started feeling dizzy and tired, and I was having a lot of heart palpitations." She reached out to her primary care physician, Dr. Kelly Schuering at Boston Medical Center, who sent her for an echocardiogram. That’s when she met cardiologist Dr. Stephen Tsaur.

“Dr. Tsaur took a look and told me I have a hole in between my atria and a cleft in my mitral valve, both congenital heart conditions I had been born with. Because of these conditions, I had developed muscle thickening in my heart."

BMC collaborates closely with Boston Children’s Hospital for many types of complex congenital heart diseases that require specialized surgery. Camille scheduled her surgery with a Boston Children’s pediatric heart surgeon in February 2024. “Throughout the process, I had a lot of support from Dr. Tsaur and the cardiology team at BMC."

Camille’s surgery went well and has continued to follow-up with Dr. Tsaur for regular visits. “Every time I see him, he’s engaged and interested in how I’m doing as a person, not just in my heart," she says. “Having health care providers that you can trust and communicate with is so beneficial — it can be really scary to go through surgery, so knowing that you have someone who is in your corner is truly priceless.”

Earlier this month, BMC sponsored an in-person Black Health Space restorative gathering at Twelfth Baptist Church.

The event, hosted by Health Your Love Period during Black History Month, centered on guided breathwork, sound healing, and therapeutic activities designed to support emotional and spiritual well-being, led by a board-certified chaplain and other trained facilitators.

The participants, who included several BMC patients and staff, were encouraged to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves and one another in the welcoming space.
