Meet our Team Ellie Boston runner Sean Swanton. Sean is running the 130th Boston Marathon presented by of America in honor of his mom, who is living with breast cancer.

"Years ago, my mom fought and beat breast cancer. A few years later, it came back as metastatic breast cancer—and she is still in the fight today. Her strength and resilience have shown me what true courage looks like, and I want to carry that strength through every mile I run. I feel truly blessed for this opportunity to run for my mom and to help support others in their fight."

Meet our Team Ellie Boston runner Vincent Pulselli. Vincent is running the 130th Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America in honor of his late wife Christina, a former Ellie Fund patient, who passed away from breast cancer in 2023.

"My wife Christina passed away in 2023 of breast cancer, our family was a recipient of assistance from the Ellie Fund, which was much appreciated. I had learned about the Ellie Fund through my wife's oncologist, Dr. Amy Comander. Their assistance was so helpful and important to us."

Their willingness to stand with patients and families facing breast cancer and help spread awareness was remarkable. It is communities like Waltham High Hockey that allows Ellie Fund to continue supporting patients across Massachusetts.

Today, we begin 30 Years of Ellie Fund: Inspired by One Woman’s Story. 💗

Ellie Fund was created by two brothers to honor their mother, Ellie, who lived with metastatic breast cancer for 15 years and passed away at just 49 years old.

While treatment options and survival rates have improved since Ellie’s diagnosis, the emotional and financial stress of breast cancer has not. A diagnosis turns a person’s world upside down. It affects not only their health, but also their family, finances, and overall well-being.

This was true for Ellie in the 1980s, and it is still true today. That is why Ellie Fund exists.

In the weeks and months ahead, we will share 30 stories of individuals and families who have received support from Ellie Fund. Each story reflects Ellie’s legacy and reminds us that no one should have to face breast cancer alone.

We invite you to follow along, listen, and witness the impact of 30 years of care and compassion.

Ellie Popkin, was a dedicated mother, wife, and community volunteer in Newton. Both before and while living with metastatic breast cancer, she dedicated her time to her family and the Newton community. She quietly persevered through years of treatment while also volunteering as a Boy Scouts den mother, preschool teacher, and much more.

"Today, my mom is a survivor. Running the Boston Marathon with Ellie Fund is my way to honor her strength, carry forward her resilience, and support others who are in the fight now. Crossing the finish line on Boylston Street will be more than completing 26.2 miles. It will be transforming that fearful moment in Rome into strength, purpose, and hope - and doing my part to ensure no one has to face breast cancer alone."

We are incredibly proud to share that Ellie Fund Boston Marathon runner Jennifer Capone Haberek has been featured in Boston.com’s Why I Run series — a powerful spotlight on the stories behind the miles.

Jennifer’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. In 2024, she faced triple-negative breast cancer while eight months pregnant and caring for her ten-month-old son. During that unimaginable time, Ellie Fund was there to support her family.

Now cancer-free, Jennifer is taking on the 2026 Boston Marathon to give back and honor that experience.
