Hearth, Inc. - ending elder homelessness

Hearth, Inc. - ending elder homelessness Hearth is dedicated to the elimination of homelessness among the elderly. We house, prevent, and/or stabilize housing for individuals over 50.

We manage 228 units of permanent supportive housing and an Outreach program, which helps over 250 elders each year to find and succeed in housing of their own. Recently we partnered with the Corporation for Supportive Housing to create a National Initiative to End Elder Homelessness.

We have a critical opportunity to support funding to prevent older adult homelessness in the FY27 MA House budget. Amendments #1671 and #527 provide vital short-term housing bridge subsidies to keep low-income older adults securely housed.

These amendments put real resources behind the prevention work that keeps older adults safely housed. We need your help to get them passed.

Please take 1 minute to ask your Rep for their support: https://tinyurl.com/fy27housebudget

Our 2025 Annual Report is now available. Last year, Hearth served a record 633 older adults across our Housing, Outreach, and Prevention programs; an 11% increase from the year before. Inside the report, you will meet Anthony, who spent over 26 years without stable housing, and Tony, who was handed the keys to his own apartment within days of returning to a shelter. Their stories are proof of what's possible when older adults have a safe place to call home. Read the full report here: https://hearth-home.org/annual-report-2025/

Happy ! We’re sharing our deepest thanks to the volunteers who help drive our mission here at Hearth. One great example comes from our volunteers Safiya, Tariq, and Marley. When asked why he volunteers at Hearth, Tariq shared that, “Working with older adults is like being a kid and receiving an adult sized jacket. At first it seems too big, but over time, you learn the jacket fits just right.” You can read more about Tariq, Safiya, and Marley in our recent blog post: https://hearth-home.org/volunteer-appreciation-week/ FriendshipWorks

Spring is often framed as a season of renewal.

But renewal is hard to reach without housing, safety, and stability.

At Hearth, we believe every older adult deserves more than survival. They deserve the support needed to adjust, recover, and move forward with dignity.

Yesterday's Annual Meeting at the Kroc Center was a morning worth celebrating. We honored this year's Hearth Housing Champion Award recipients, discussed the state of affordable, supportive housing in Massachusetts, and reflected on the growing need for our work. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Rainy spring days can be inconvenient for some of us. For older adults experiencing homelessness, they can be dangerous.

Wet clothing, cold nights, and prolonged exposure create serious risks, especially for older adults already managing health vulnerabilities.

The season changes. The need does not.

Support is not always about a big intervention. Sometimes it's about a specific adjustment that helps someone feel safe.

A new resident entering Hearth housing could not sleep because it was too quiet and the bed was too soft. After so much instability, comfort did not feel normal. Hearth responded with a firmer mattress and a noise machine to help the resident adjust and transition to their new home.

That is what responsive care looks like. Listening. Adapting. Supporting each person with compassion and dignity.

Because of our Winter Walk supporters, Hearth raised more than $50,000 to help protect older adults through an unpredictable winter.

We are grateful for every donor, walker, and supporter who showed up.

But the work continues. Winter may be behind us, yet the unpredictability older adults face does not end with the season.

Spring brings new risks. Hearth will keep adjusting to meet them.

The weather has been unpredictable lately. For older adults facing homelessness, housing instability is even more unpredictable and far more dangerous.

In this month’s CEO Corner, Hearth President and CEO Rhonda Pieroni reflects on a simple truth: nobody predicts they are going to become homeless. And for many older adults, even one sudden disruption can put housing, health, and safety at risk.

At Hearth, our work is about more than shelter. It is about adjusting to real human needs in real time so older adults can remain housed with dignity. Read more at https://hearth-home.org/ceo-corner-when-life-changes-without-warning-hearth-adjusts/

Our Story

Hearth provides services to almost 600 elders who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. All of our programs are designed to help elders succeed in their housing and breaking the cycle of homelessness.
