Join Loeta Robles DDS, Brooke Edgar RDH, and the American Laser Study Club for the free 1-hour webinar "Buccal Up: Clinical Insights and New Research on Buccal Ties" on Tuesday, March 17th, at 5:30 pm PT (8:30 pm ET). Register Now: alsc.club/buccal

Abstract: Buccal ties may restrict the oral range of motion and contribute to reduced maximum opening. This presentation reviews current research on the relationship between buccal ties and maximum opening. It explores how a limited opening can affect an infant's latch, feeding efficiency, early speech development, facial expressions, and overall oral function. This presentation may challenge traditional perspectives and expand clinical understanding of the functional significance of buccal ties.

Learning Objectives:
- Describe the anatomy and function of the buccal frenulum.
- Explain how buccal ties may restrict the oral range of motion and maximal mouth opening.
- Discuss the impact of limited opening on latch, feeding, speech, facial expressions, and oral function.
- Identify clinical signs of restrictive buccal ties through assessment.
- Apply current research and clinical insights to support comprehensive oral evaluations.

This webinar is open to dentists and all healthcare professionals. CE credits are not currently available; if this changes, we will update registrants.

Unable to attend the live webinar? Don't worry. Following the event, all registered individuals will receive an email containing a link to access the recorded webinar.

Dr. Piya Gandhi (a LightScalpel user) is leading an upcoming airway-focused program that may be especially valuable for orthodontic and airway-minded clinicians.

"Saving Our Future One Airway at a Time: Airway Interventions from Birth to 6" will cover early airway intervention concepts for young patients, with in-person and virtual ticket options. The event flyer lists March 27-28 and an 8:00 AM start time.

This is not a laser-focused program, but it may be a helpful educational opportunity for practices focused on airway, early growth and development, and interdisciplinary care.

New literature highlights for clinicians managing oral lichen planus (OLP):

In the Journal of Clinical Medicine on January 29, 2026, Fiegler-Rudol et al published "High-Power Laser Therapy for Oral Lichen Planus: A Systematic Review." Across the included clinical studies, the authors report meaningful improvements in lesion outcomes and patient-reported symptoms with high-power laser approaches, particularly for CO2 laser therapy.

"CO2 lasers demonstrated superior outcomes in lesion resolution and pain relief..."

They also note longer-term follow-up showing durable improvements, as well as randomized comparisons in which CO2 laser groups achieved greater reductions in lesion area and clinical severity scores than corticosteroid-based approaches.
