Huge congratulations to Dr. Ann Bynum, DDS — a 2026 recipient of the Kumar Patel Prize in Laser Surgery.

Dr. Bynum is being recognized for her outstanding contributions to pediatric dental laser surgery education, including tongue-tie release and frenectomy training, and for championing a truly multidisciplinary model of care.

Her story is a reminder that leadership matters: building the right team, supporting colleagues, and mentoring the next generation so more communities can benefit from coordinated care.

Board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Austin Rodenberg of ELM Pediatric Dentistry and the Kentucky Tongue Tie Center now offers. He uses state-of-the-art LightScalpel CO2 laser procedures for infants, children, and adolescents. Dr. Rodenberg focuses on tongue- and lip-tie releases (frenectomy) to help improve breastfeeding, latch, and early feeding challenges, and also uses the LightScalpel for a wide range of pediatric soft-tissue procedures.

LightScalpel treatment benefits for patients include reduced bleeding, less swelling and discomfort, a lower risk of infection, shorter procedure time, and a smoother recovery. In many cases, procedures are bloodless and require no sutures.

Dr. Rodenberg's interest in treating tongue and lip ties began after his own son experienced feeding complications from an undiagnosed tongue tie, leading him to pursue additional training and to champion an interdisciplinary approach with lactation consultants, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and myofunctional therapists.

To learn more or to schedule an appointment, visit elmpediatricdentistry.com or kytonguetie.com, or call (502) 754-6633. The American-made LightScalpel CO2 laser is an ideal tool for virtually all pediatric soft-tissue procedures.

David E. Stall, DMD (Water's Edge Dental, West Chester, PA) shared a simple but instructive soft-tissue case involving tooth #8. The patient presented with a localized red spot of inflammation at the gingival margin. On exam, Dr. Stall noted a subgingival depression in the enamel, consistent with a localized irritant/foreign-body source contributing to inflammation and an uneven gingival margin.

Using a LightScalpel surgical CO2 laser, Dr. Stall performed conservative gingival margin reshaping and de-epithelialization around #8 (documented from pre-treatment through 2- and 4-week follow-ups). CO2 laser energy is strongly absorbed by water-rich soft tissue, supporting precise ablation with good visibility and hemostasis during many oral soft-tissue procedures.

Thank you, Dr. Stall, for sharing this interesting case.

Holiday Party recap. 🎄 We took a break from the day-to-day to celebrate together with a white elephant gift exchange, catered BBQ lunch, bingo, raffles, and plenty of laughs. Most importantly, it was a chance to slow down, connect, and enjoy time together as a team.

Grateful for everyone who made it such a great day. Happy Holidays!

For years we have been saying… we want to manage our tongue tie release procedures, the way we would want to be cared for with our own babies. And this week in our beautiful new space we got to do that for the first time. From the pre-care, during the procedure, to the follow up care we want to help what can be a really overwhelming time Be just a little bit easier. We dreamed it up this way because…we were moms first!
