Today on International Day of Persons with Disabilities we share some insights from Theresa, who lives with younger onset dementia.

ā€œDementia is a disability and if it was a physical disability everyone has gone to great lengths with ramps and disabled access toilets and all that. It's very easy to build a ramp and then you think job done we’re great, but it’s a lot harder when it’s behavioural change. We have an entitlement to be supported.

All we want to do is live our lives. We don’t want people to smile at us extra or don’t overly want more friendliness, we just want to be able to go about our business and enabled to do that, and given permission to do that in the best way we can. It’s an entitlement not so much a ā€˜nice to have’.ā€

An estimated 70 per cent of people with dementia live in the community. But many communities don’t really understand what dementia is or how it can affect someone. This may lead to people living with dementia feeling socially isolated.

The good news is that small changes can make a big difference and enable people living with dementia to continue to live the life they choose.

It's not "just a little finger!"

We often hear from our patients that they can’t believe how much trouble an injured little finger has caused them.

This could be because the little finger contributes to up to 25% of our gross grip strength. šŸ’ŖšŸ¼šŸ’ŖšŸ¼ Some articles have even a higher figure and studies have shown that losing your little finger is detrimental to every day function (Metholt, Chinchalkar & Richards, 2010).

So not ā€œjust a little fingerā€ after all!! šŸ‘šŸ¼
