Mental health is a challenge because it often changes without our noticing. One day, it seems like everyone is irritating us, nothing is working out the way we wanted, we’re under pressure from work or family, and there’s not enough hours in the day to get everything done 😫

Even one of those days is exhausting. When we have two, three, four days like it, one after the other? When we’re on our second week of it?

This is when we need to stop and take stock of ourselves.

What do we need? 🌳 🛌 ️‍🏋️‍️️
What does our body need? 💧🥪
Can we ask for help? 👋🙏

It is far too easy to get caught in a spiral of working to exhaustion, being disappointed in the outcome, and still being unwilling to take the time needed to recover.

Give yourself a break. 💖 You’ve earned it.

Our emotions may start from our minds 🧠 but the connection between mental emotions and physiological response is a strong one.

Consider embarrassment as an example: When embarrassed, a common reaction is to go red in the face. This is a physical response to an experienced emotion. 😳

Our bodies can help us identify our complex emotions. If we are able to address those emotions and work through them; we can help ease the pain or tension within our body. 👍

Knowing where in our bodies we feel certain emotions can give us important insights into ourselves 🔎 Regular reflective journaling helps us to track our struggles and our growth 🌱 Our free app, humanStreams makes self-reflection simple.

💭A 2008 study by Kross and Ayduk, theorized that rumination decreased when participants used a “self-distanced” perspective to analyze their emotions from a past experience.

Participants in the self-immersed perspective were asked to visualize an experience through their own eyes 👀 Those in the self-distanced group were asked to visualize the experience as an observer, or a “fly on the wall”.

The study found that those in the self-distanced group had less negative emotions 😌 and were better able to view the past experience in a new way. Self-Distanced Reflection, according to the results, is a better way to revisit and analyze past experiences. ✔

According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, individuals who engage in regular self-reflection show lower levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, and better immune system functioning ✨

This suggests that taking time to reflect on one's thoughts and feelings can not only lead to personal growth and understanding, but also have positive impacts on physical health 💪

We all know those naturally creative people 👩‍🎨 The ones who sketch, paint, or play an instrument. Often we can feel that creativity just “isn’t our thing” because our interests don’t fall into the traditional idea of Art 😒

But creativity ✨ is just a form of expression and we all have the ability to express ourselves.

So, pick something that gives you directions, or already has the lines drawn. Just because you’re following a pattern or a recipe, doesn’t mean you’re not creating. 💡Find an activity you enjoy and let your personal creativity loose. It's all about trusting yourself and playing around! No room for judgment. 🙅‍♀️

Finding the time to self-reflect always seems to be more of a challenge than expected ⏰. By using the natural pauses in our day, we can break into the habit with an easy transition.

☀ Taking a moment before starting the day is a great way to get your goals, motivations, and emotions in order.

🌙 Reflecting in the evening helps to put the events of a long day in perspective, slow down the mind, and get your body ready for sleep.

🥡 A meal provides a nice break between tasks. Consider taking five minutes to yourself before moving forward with your day.

😤 Take some time after an emotional situation. Let out your emotions, your thoughts, and help yourself get collected while processing the experience.

👀 It’s easy to lose time on social media, take this post as an excuse to set down the phone and consider your thoughts and feelings in this moment.

humanStreams, the stream-of-consciousness journaling app, lets you set a timed push notification as a reminder to take a few minutes out of the day and spend that time with yourself.
