Running postpartum.

We know all our runner moms are eager to get back to it postpartum. However, how you return to running post-birth can make or break your pelvic floor health.

First things first:
It's crucial that you spend quality time rehabbing + restrengthening your core + pelvic floor! Gentle rehab (like our 4th trimester series) can be started as early as one day postpartum. Think core + pelvic floor reconnection in bed with your babe!

Secondly:
The focus on rehab + reconnection should begin to progress throughout the first six weeks postpartum (or whenever you decide the time is right for you).

The way we like to guide progressions in the early days postpartum is simple.
⋐ Reconnection
⋐ Functional awareness through everyday movements
⋐ Pelvic floor + TVA-focused moves
⋐ Unilateral exercises
⋐ Breath, PF, + Core connections paired w/ movement
⋐ Up-leveled + more traditional core-focused work (these shouldn't show up in your routine until your core + pelvic floor is ready and can handle the demand).

Lastly:
Once you're at a good place with your core + pelvic floor, you've stopped bleeding, and are ready to start preparing your body to run again, start slow! Rushing back into a strong running stride could set you back weeks or even months.

Returning to running will look + feel different for every woman, but it's essential to know the following: Begin each progression day with a walking warm-up mixed w/ unilateral and mobility work. Scale way down with what your normal should be. Walk/jogs are great ways to begin while slowly progressing over several weeks. Continue incorporating core + pelvic floor after your progression-based "run" to ensure optimal healing.

A N D don't rush, even when tempted. Trust the process and trust that your body needs a slow/progression-based return.
