The Ben Cao Pin Hui Jing Yao (本草品彙精要) was completed in 1505 AD. It was produced for a Ming Dynasty Emperor and was illustrated by hand by artists from the Imperial Palace. However, after the Emperor died, his doctors were executed and their book was kept from the world in the Forbidden City, only to be discovered much later. We went to the national library in Rome to see one of the world's few intact original copies, which was acquired by Italian Jesuits during the Qing Dynasty.
