Here's your December dietitian tip! During the holiday season, kids have a lot more access to "special foods" 🍪🍬🥧 than they usually do. Sugar intake can feel a bit out of control. Here are a few tips on how to balance out the sweets during snack time.

Remember, the holidays don't last forever, and even kids get tired of eating treats all the time. Don't stress too much and enjoy the holiday season!

Over 125 cases of measles have been reported in Utah this year - with over 70 occuring in children under the age of 18. This has been Utah's largest measles outbreak in 50 years, so it's important to make sure your child is vaccinated and to know the signs.

Measles is highly contagious! It can spread from person to person, through the air with a cough or sneeze (even lingering in a room up to 2 hours) - and a person can spread it before they know they are sick.

Symptoms usually start 7-14 days (up to 3 weeks) after exposure. Kids usually develop cold symptoms that get worse in the first 3 days before developing a rash. Here's what to watch for:

🤒 High fever, 104+
😴 Fatigue or fussiness
😮‍💨 Cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes
😷 White spots inside the cheeks (Koplik spots)
🔴 A red, blotchy rash that starts 3-5 days later on the face and spreads to the body.

If your child has symptoms or has been exposed, contact your pediatrician right away. The best protection against measles is the MMR vaccine. It is safe and 97% effective in protecting against measles after 2 doses.

Croup often shows up at night & that sudden, barking cough can be scary to hear! 😮‍💨 Most of the time, croup is caused by a virus and improves after several days with comfort, cool mist, and fluids.

Sometimes, the virus causes more swelling in the airway, which makes it difficult for your child to breathe, and treatment is needed.

If your child has noisy breathing or trouble catching their breath, call your pediatrician or seek care right away.

Despite its scary name, hand, foot, and mouth (HFM) disease is a common, contagious illness caused by different viruses.

Symptoms usually start like a common cold - with fever, runny nose, and sore throat - but then a rash with red spots or small blisters can appear.

Social media can help teens feel connected and a little less alone. For some kids, that really matters. Of course, there are real concerns that come with screen time, cyberbullying, and comparison culture. And, just like we teach teens to drive safely even though cars can be dangerous, we can also teach teens how to navigate the online world to keep them safe and feel connected.

In our newest blog, behavioral health specialist Rachel Wasser, CSW, at our Willow Creek office, explains more about the importance of connection for teens and safety tips for parents. Link in bio for full blog.

Let's Talk about Practicing Gratitude!

It’s more than good manners. It's a skill that helps kids (and grown-ups!) feel happier, more connected, and see the bright side even on hard days. 💫

Studies show that practicing gratitude leads to more positive emotions, optimism, school satisfaction, empathy, and kids are less likely to feel depressed or anxious.

Swipe for tips on how to practice gratitude & make thankfulness a habit with your family!
