This is a common question from parents. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can occur at any age, but children are most likely to be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Noticing early symptoms can make a big difference.

Common signs may include:

- More frequent urination (especially at night, which may cause a child who is potty trained to start bedwetting again).

- Being very thirsty

- Feeling more tired than usual

- Weight loss

- Increased appetite

- Abdominal pain & vomiting

If you ever notice changes that concern you or feel "off," talk to your pediatrician. We're here to listen, check, and guide you!

Yes, we offer Beyfortus at our office to help protect babies from severe RSV infections!

(nirsevimab) is a monoclonal antibody that provides immunization to RSV. It is recommended for infants younger than 8 months who are born during or are entering their first RSV season (October - March).

It is also recommended for some children ages 8-19 months who are at higher risk for severe RSV disease and entering their second RSV season.

If you have questions or to schedule your child's Beyfortus immunization, call our office today!

Trick-or-treating is fun...cavities are not! 👻 The longer and more frequently your child's teeth are exposed to sugar, the greater the risk for cavities. "Sticky sugar" foods such as candy, caramel, fruit snacks, and gum can bathe the teeth in sugar for hours.

Here are some helpful brushing reminders:

🦷 Brush teeth every morning and night. It's recommended to brush after eating a sugary item, too!

🦷 Use toothpaste with fluoride to help strengthen tooth enamel & prevent cavities.

🦷 For kids under 3, use a smear of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice.

🦷 For kids ages 3-6, use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

🦷 If your child is old enough to brush their own, encourage brushing for 2 minutes. Setting a timer or having them sing a song can help.

🦷 Remind kids to brush the trickier teeth in the back that are hidden and not just the front teeth.

🦷 Floss between teeth daily.

🦷 Keep up with dentist visits every 6 months for checkups.

Before your little (or big) monsters head out for Halloween, here are some easy safety steps to help give you peace of mind:

✨ Plan a familiar route
🧙‍♀️ Use face paint instead of masks to keep vision clear
💡 Stay visible with glow sticks & bring a flashlight
👟 Wear comfy shoes
🚸 Cross streets at crosswalks & look both ways!
🍭 Double-check candy at home & throw out anything open or suspicious

For older kids, encourage them to go with friends, stick together, and to familiar neighborhoods. Set a curfew and remind them to keep a charged phone & share their route with you. 👫🌙📱

Wishing all of our families a safe & Happy Halloween!

Many parents have had questions about the hepatitis B vaccine lately. Here are answers to our most common questions about hepatitis B and the vaccine!

In the meantime, here are some quick facts to know about hepatitis B:

- Hepatitis B is a virus that infects the liver and can cause mild, moderate, or severe liver disease, including liver cancer.
- Babies & younger children are at higher risk & symptoms may not show up until decades later.
- It is spread primarily by blood contact but can survive outside the body for up to 7 days, so it can even be spread by doing things like sharing a toothbrush.
- Vaccination is safe and has reduced hepatitis B infections by 99% in children under 19 years of age.

As pediatricians, we trust and follow the AAP Recommended Immunization Schedule and are always here to help you navigate decisions with any questions or concerns you may have. Just like we've always been 🧡

The hepatitis B virus can spread in several ways, including primarily by blood contact or even sharing a toothbrush (not just sexually transmitted). Since hepatitis B infections may or may not have symptoms, often appearing decades later, it can spread easily to others without knowing & be very difficult to prevent.

Protecting your newborn at birth with the hepatitis B vaccine provides important protection in the first few days & beyond as they grow.

Have more questions? Just talk to your pediatrician. We're here to help you, work through your concerns, and provide information you can trust 💙
