We’ve Moved!!!

Over the years, Rise Birth and Postpartum became family to soooooo many parents across the DMV. We’ve loved on many mommas and babies, and we’ve cried with them, too. It’s been one of the most beautiful journeys imaginable, but now we must bid farewell to Rise because… We did a thing… a really big thing. We have a new home!! Rise Birth and Postpartum grew into that massive ball of awesomeness, and in doing so, we needed a new home.

The Liberated birth, A.K.A LibBi, is a straightforward, ready-to-use childbirth and postpartum education tool designed to simplify things for birth workers. We aren’t reinventing the wheel; we created a reliable, evidence-based resource. With LibBi, you no longer have to spend countless hours creating lesson plans or wondering if you're covering everything. It’s all right there, laid out for you, so you can focus your energy on what you do best.

**LibBi isn't just for birthworkers; it can also be purchased by parents and others.

October 4, 2019

A day that I will never forget. As a doula, I’ve stood by many women while they birthed their babies and navigated the postpartum realm.

I’ve wiped tears and vomit, coached and reassured, hugged and prayed, and spiritually traveled with women as they, along with the ancestors, ushered their babies earthside. I’ve also served as an advocate against medical and birth injustice, especially for my Black and brown sisters.

In 2019, I tried to amplify the voice of a Black woman who felt harmed during labor. I contacted key individuals at a local hospital to voice concern and prevent future occurrences. Met with silence, I addressed my local doula community.

The hospital, instead of seeking a solution, sent me a cease and desist, calling my speech “illegitimate.” They missed an opportunity for growth and reconciliation.

I was forced to delete my statements from my community’s social media and never spoke of it again.

As a Black woman and a Black birth worker, I’m reminded of our Black mothers of gynecology, Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, whose bodies were horrifically experimented on by Dr. J. Marion Sims without consent in the 1840s, and Henrietta Lacks, whose cells were stolen and exploited for medical profit. The voices of hundreds of thousands of Black women raising their concerns against a medical system that has buried the bodies and blood of their lineages have made me understand that my voice isn’t just mine—it’s also theirs.

I am Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey! I am Henrietta Lacks! I am my ancestors! To silence my voice is to perpetuate the same silencing behaviors of this country’s history. I am the walking and talking spirit of those women. I am the voice of the mothers I serve, my children, and their children to come.

I say to you all: when faced with a giant, continue to move! Stand tall! BE LOUD! Step out of line! Take up space! Be angry! Never be comfortable in spaces of injustice.

I dare you to move! Like today never happened before!

A large portion of maternal deaths occur due to systemic issues within healthcare, such as inadequate follow-up care, misdiagnosis, and dismissal of symptoms.

Studies also show that nearly 56% of maternal deaths happen within the first year postpartum and at home. This means that most of the women or people that gave birth were discharged and later died in their homes or after returning to the hospital to advocate for themselves due to complications/discomfort. Further more, over 40% of women do NOT attend postpartum check-up until beyond 8 weeks postpartum. This highlights the critical need for comprehensive and early postpartum care and prevention.

Baby girl was fussy. Hadn’t had a bowel movement since the day prior. Gentle belly massages and words of affirmation helped. Blow out occurred about 5 mins after followed by a very happy and relieved baby.

We all know numerous women who have given birth and have some type of pregnancy/childbirth related issue that they’ve normalized.

Some of them are our close friends and some are our grandmas. Pain and bodily dysfunction after childbirth isn’t normal!

What does a postpartum doula do?

Myth Buster:

“ All postpartum doulas practice the same”.

Every postpartum doula is different. I believe in traditional postpartum care and have created Rise Birth and Postpartum with the belief that parents not only need support and care for their babies, but also for themselves.

“Postpartum doula care is only for the first few months postpartum”.

While that is true for many doulas, traditional postpartum care is rooted in the ideology that once you have your baby you are postpartum… period.

You may need postpartum care immediately after childbirth or until toddlerhood.

“Postpartum doulas only hold and care for babies”

Most Postpartum doulas study the anatomy and physiology of postpartum health and newborn appearance & development.

While not a medical professional, most postpartum doulas will have knowledge on postpartum bleeding, cesarean healing, common postpartum complications, nutrition, common newborn Illnesses & skin complications, postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, and the ability to know when to flag an emergency before it becomes an emergency.

Take a look at my day as a postpartum doula. This particular mom needed help around the house while she nursed her baby.
I’m happy to answer any questions you may have 😊.
