Communication can be a challenge in all kinds of relationships, but one skill that helps prevent miscommunication is called active listening. To practice active listening, follow these two steps:

1. Listen closely enough to be able to repeat back what the person is saying
2. Summarize what you heard them say, and ask for clarification that you heard correctly before you respond

For example, "I hear you saying____, do I understand that right?"

Not only does this force you to pay attention rather than thinking of what you will say next, but it assures the other person that you understand them.

It’s no secret that good sleep impacts mental health, but good quality sleep can be hard to come by. Here are a few tips if you have trouble falling or staying asleep:

• Consistency - try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day
• Routine - give your body cues that it’s time to wind down (drink tea, take a bath, read, etc.)
• Environment - make sure the temperature is cool, avoid screens 1-2 hours before bed, diffuse lavender oil, use a weighted blanket
• Release - write down the thoughts running through your mind so your brain can let go of keeping up with it. It will be there tomorrow!
• Avoid - sleeping with your phone in your bedroom to help you disengage and rest. **Get a $5 alarm if your phone is your alarm 😉

When you start to feel anxious, overwhelmed, or dissociate, try this grounding technique!

5 - Name five things you can see
4 - Name four things you can feel
3 - Name three things you can hear
2 - Name two things you can smell
1 - Name one thing you can taste

This practice helps ground your body in the present moment when your brain gets stuck thinking about the future of reliving the past. The best thing about this practice is that you can do it no matter where you are - at work, with your family, at school, at dinner, anywhere! Notice how you feel before and after you access all five senses. Bonus if you can go outside for this!

Hello! Just want to share a little bit about myself and welcome you to this page.

I am from Texas originally, but lived in Nashville for several years before moving to Bowling Green in 2021. My husband works in ministry and we have been married for 5 years. We also have the best dog in the world!

When I am not working, you can find me reading, going for walks, traveling, spending time with family and friends, and serving at our church. I love game nights, warm weather, and any kind of cheese.

My hope for this page is to offer hope and a few tools to encourage you toward health and wholeness.
