🏥 Med Center Health Moment 🏥

Just three years after the hospital’s 1953 expansion, Hospital Administrator Charles H. Clark announced the hospital had once again outgrown its facilities and required further expansion.

After five years of planning and fundraising, ground was broken once again on the City-County hospital’s latest expansion in 1961. Construction was completed on May 11, 1963.

This expansion added 66 patient beds, a front lobby, a coffee shop, a prayer room, a conference room, and a classroom, along with expansions to the Laboratory, X-Ray Department, and dining room. This expansion cost $1.4 million.

💙 Faces of Med Center Health: Henry Lewis Underwood 💚

The city Hospital likely wouldn’t have been formed as soon as it did without Henry L. Underwood. Underwood (1848-1925) served as the Secretary of the Bowling Green and Warren County Chamber of Commerce, and he also served as the Trustee of the City Hospital Fund. Underwood’s father, Warner Lewis Underwood, was President Abraham Lincoln’s Consul to Glasgow, Scotland.

In 1921, under the direction of Underwood, the City Hospital Fund canvassed Bowling Green residents, particularly the city's businessmen, to raise $50,000 for the construction of a City Hospital. On the first day of fundraising, Underwood secured $10,000 in donations.

Later that same year, Underwood secured the land on which the City Hospital was built. Underwood was deeded two acres of land atop Reservoir Hill. Unfortunately, Underwood passed away a year before the hospital was built.

Dr. Laiken Hayes, a primary care provider at Med Center Health Primary Care, will be hosting her first Walk with a Doc community walking program on Saturday, February 14, at 10:15 a.m. at The Greenwood Mall Food Court.

This program aims to get the community active! At the event, participants will get to listen to Dr. Hayes speak about a healthcare topic and then join her for a walk. This program will allow for participants to safely take a walk, learn about current health topics, and meet new people. Each event starts with a brief discussion on a health topic from Dr. Hayes. Participants will also have the opportunity to chat with Dr. Hayes and ask questions during the walk.

“As a doctor specializing in lifestyle medicine, I like to educate about health topics, and I really love getting out and moving,” said Dr. Hayes. “At Walk with a Doc, we will meet at Greenwood Mall every second Saturday of the month at 10:15 a.m. Our first meet-up will be this Saturday, February 14! We’ll start by talking, fostering that social connection, and then I’ll discuss an interesting health topic with the group. Most of these topics will be embedded in lifestyle medicine. After that, we’ll get to walking for a bit! We’re hoping to be able to start walking outside by April. We’re thinking maybe we can try to get out to Kereiakes Park, once the weather warms up. I’m really excited for this, and I’m really hoping a lot of people can benefit from this.”

This free community walking program will be hosted on the second Saturday of every month, always beginning at 10:15 a.m.
