🏬 Med Center Health Moment 🏬

In May 1968, the City-County Hospital opened the region’s first Coronary Care Unit, marking a major advancement in the treatment of heart patients. The $25,000 investment was designed to provide constant monitoring and rapid response for patients suffering from heart attacks and other critical cardiac conditions. Specialized electronic monitoring equipment enabled nurses and physicians to continuously monitor heart activity and respond immediately to life-threatening changes.

Registered nurses travelled to Kansas and New Jersey to receive special training to operate the new equipment, including cardiac monitors and emergency response systems. The CCU enabled staff to administer intensive care more efficiently, improving patient survival rates during the critical early hours of cardiac emergencies. Hospital officials noted that the new unit significantly strengthened the hospital’s ability to provide advanced cardiac care to the community.

💙 Faces of Med Center Health: Mrs. T.W. Allen and Mrs. James R. Hines 💚

From 1945-1946, two Warren County women played integral roles in raising awareness of the importance of cancer fundraising and the need for a cancer clinic in Bowling Green.

Mrs. T.W. Allen, of Smiths Grove, was named chair of the Society for Control of Cancer for Warren County in April of 1945. From that point on, she played a major role in fundraising and raising awareness for the disease of cancer in Warren County. In May of 1945, Allen asked for a penny from each resident in Warren County. The drive raised more than $300 to go towards the Cancer Fund. Overall, she raised more than $500 to go towards cancer care.

In 1946, Mrs. James Hines was named chairman of the Cancer Prevention Program. Hines was one of the first to suggest bringing a cancer clinic to Bowling Green, pointing out that there was no cancer clinic in Western Kentucky. She originally suggested Bowling Green’s Cancer Clinic be placed in the former site of the local tuberculosis hospital. The Cancer Clinic officially opened at City Hospital in October of 1946. Hines was considered the original promoter of the Cancer Clinic, and she also worked in the clinic registering patients.
