First time parents are always so wonderful to work with! They are so excited about each part and portion and they are so excited. It keeps me appreciative of all of it!

In the wee hours of the morning, I watched a 3 1/2 year-old sit quietly beside her mother and her grandmother‘s lap. That big sister had a huge smile on her face while she watched her mommy reached down and brought her baby brother up to her chest in a beautiful family event. That was their second home birth.

For the first time in several pregnancies, this mama was fully nutritionally, supported through her pregnancy and felt amazing! For the first time in several pregnancies, this mama was not Harry induced and didn’t have to work through many long hours of labor just to try to keep things going. For the first time ever, this mama experienced her body starting labor on its own and was surprised when this Midwife encouraged her to change positions and try walking and lunges to encourage labor as opposed to doing excessive vaginal exams and making her take a bunch of herbal tincture. When her very sporadic contractions started, they continued often on throughout the day and after a warm bath and some lunges, her labor kicked over. When it did, it was a mirror two hours of labor before she was holding her baby. This is the beautyof being patient and waiting for spontaneous labor. Congratulations to this beautiful family!

My day started at 4 AM yesterday with a phone call from a client informing me that she started having contractions overnight. Her contractions were still 15 to 20 minutes or more apart and so I went about my Monday doing three prenatal visits, a phone visit, two phone consultations that ended up with two new signs, five initial appointments for new clients and then continued into attending to the laboring mom that had called me first thing in the morning. I’m getting on a plane in just a few hours to go to a midwifery conference in Greece. I have had an incredibly full 24 hours and no sleep. I hope to catchsome sleep on the plane, but this is Midwife life. A whole lot of busy and little to no sleep, but a lot of blessing!

The residual effects of birth trauma are beyond description. It is absolutely gutwrenching to watch what women go through in trying to heal from prior betrayal and deception and blatant abuse from previous care providers. It’s beyond disturbing when the trauma is a result of abuse from a prior Midwife. It’s taken two pregnancies and births for this woman to get this far in her recovery. Tonight I was honored to watch a woman who had been so deeply wounded reach down and birth, her own 10 pound baby into her hands without any interruption. I watched with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face as she greeted her baby and looked at her husband And said I caught my own baby! I’ve always wanted to catch my own baby! Nobody else ever let me! Oh my gosh, I caught my own baby! And then she looked at me and said thank you. I only did for her. What should have been doneall along. I gave her the space and the encouragement and the opportunity to do what should’ve always been done. And she caught her own baby ❤️

So many wonderful fresh new people have joined this world this month. Many beautiful births and wonderful blessings. Being a midwife means that you see the joys and the sorrows. While many are basking in newborn scent, others are grieving for the littlest footprints that have left massive imprints on their hearts. Midwives travel these roads with the women they serve. It’s a blessing and burden that comes with the midwife heart. Thank you Lord for your favor, grace and strength in this season.

And baby makes 6!! This was their first homebirth after multiple hospital births that all had the same pattern of induced labors and unnecessary interventions. It’s always fun to see how the journey unfolds and what the journey to homebirth looks like.

11:55pm: incoming call to midwife to inform her of contractions about 10 minutes apart lasting about a minute. Been going on for about a half hour. Client is a fair distance away so I get on the road. midwife en route by 12:20am.
1:12am: call to inform midwife that client’s water broke and update that contractions have been about 2 minutes apart lasting a minute or so for about a half hour. As the midwife tries to get more information, client announces a mild pushing urge. Midwife stays on the phone while continuing the drive. Client follows instructions to breathe through contractions and follow her body. Daddy catches baby boy at 1:49am while midwife coaches. Midwife arrives half hour later. Mom and baby are great! Client says hello and says “you tried to tell me that it could be fast but I didn’t realize you meant that fast.” 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😂 dad just says, “that was cool!”

Sometimes the biggest part of a labor is just waiting for the moment that it takes off. The bloody show and irregular but strong contractions go on all day long. Moms are sent into a tail spin of frustration when the contractions come on strong and then fizzle out but don’t go away. We try several things to encourage labor over the next several hours. Mom’s body is very ready but baby’s just not quite there. Finally after hours of anticipation, the contractions get strong and stay. The baby’s born in a matter of an hour (sometimes less) and I think, this is why I stayed close! I talk mom through catching her baby and bringing him up to her chest. I watch daddy greet him and big brother and big sister marvel at how cute he is. I watch a family celebrate together. I watch mommy count finger and toes and say hello. I watch the cat consider once again the ramifications of trying to jump onto the side of the birth pool and redirect him towards the couch. I watch the dogs come close and sniff the air, trying to understand what exactly is happening. They know it’s a good thing but aren’t sure about the crying from the newborn. I watch and direct as mom delivers the placenta and then settles back into the pool seat to begin nursing her this fresh, sweet person. I can’t help but smile. How precious it all is…. And a good reminder that there’s a time to be born and we often have to just wait for it so that we can bask in it.

This was my third time serving this precious family 💜 Daddy’s 3rd time catching his own baby and my first time getting there BEFORE the baby arrived. I had to make sure that I didn’t interfere with the couple’s familiarity with their own birthing processes and just support what they have done beautifully each time.
