Hello Gallatin Gallopers,

We hope you all are doing well and staying healthy!
As you probably know there will not be a field trip this afternoon with the brand inspector, however we will be working on putting together an informational video to share with you. We have decided it would be best to postpone the Butterbraid Fundraiser to a later date in 2020, and will keep you posted on all of that.

I did find this very interesting video on horse dental work that I thought you might enjoy viewing. If you have a chance to view it, take some notes and share with the group one thing you learned or a question that you have. I will compile comments and question/answers to share with the group sometime this month.

https://thehorse.com/156049/dentistry-in-horses/

I have also included the meeting agenda that was put together for the meeting that was cancelled as well as a copy of the minutes from the secretary.

I would also like to encourage all of you to try participating in the upcoming communications day and if any of you wanted to do a trial/practice run with a presentation for our club I would be happy to take a look at your presentation and could potentially share it as an educational piece to share with other club members if you were interested.

Please feel free to reach out to me at anytime with questions on project or record books.

Have a safe and wonderful weekend!!

Sincerely,

Amy Prechter

Temple Grandin to give two lectures in Bozeman on Feb. 20!

Summary: Temple Grandin, a researcher and advocate in animal behavior, stockyard best practices and agriculture as well as autism awareness, will give a lunchtime lecture on the Montana State University campus and a talk at Bozeman’s Ellen Theatre on Feb. 20.

BOZEMAN — Internationally recognized animal behavior researcher and advocate Temple Grandin will visit Bozeman next month for a pair of lectures. She will speak Feb. 20 on the Montana State University campus at noon and at Bozeman’s Ellen Theatre at 6 p.m.

Grandin’s visit is part of the Bair Ranch Foundation Seminar Series hosted by the Department of Animal and Range Sciences in the MSU College of Agriculture. The series brings nationally and internationally recognized scientists, agriculturalists and educators to speak to students and community members about agricultural topics. All of the series’ events are free and open to the public.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Grandin to Bozeman,” said Sreekala Bajwa, MSU’s vice president for agriculture, dean of the College of Agriculture and director of the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station. “Her innovations and advancements in agriculture cannot be overstated, and it will be a privilege for all of us to have the opportunity to hear from her firsthand.”

Grandin, currently a professor at Colorado State University, pioneered novel techniques for calming animals and lowering stress in feedlot situations. Her research has touched upon topics ranging from animal behavior during handling and transport, effective designs for stockyards and corrals, humane slaughter techniques and impacts of animal stress on meat quality. Her life and work were portrayed in the 2010 film “Temple Grandin,” and she was honored on Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world the same year.

Grandin is also known for chronicling her life as an individual on the autism spectrum. In her book “Thinking in Pictures,” Grandin noted that she often found it easier to relate to and understand animals than people and she applied that connection to rethinking and redesigning animal holding and processing facilities. She helped create “hug boxes,” devices which have proven calming and effective both to animals under stress and humans struggling with anxiety. Grandin has designed livestock facilities in use in North America, Europe and Australia. Many North American meat plants use a restraint system she designed to be less stressful for cattle.

The first of Grandin’s two lectures in Bozeman, “Improving Cattle Stockmanship,” will be held Thursday, Feb. 20 on the MSU campus in the Animal Bioscience Building Room 134 from noon to 1 p.m. Her second lecture of the day, “Understanding Animal Behavior and Autism” will begin with a reception at 5 p.m. with the main lecture at 6 p.m., both at the Ellen Theatre, 17 W. Main St. Tickets are not necessary for either event.

“Dr. Grandin’s visit is sure to be one of our best-attended events in this year’s seminar series,” said Patrick Hatfield, head of the animal and range sciences department. “Her life story and research are so compelling, and each of us has a lot to learn from her contributions to agriculture and insight into human nature.”

The Bair Ranch Foundation Seminar Series is aimed at fostering greater public engagement and outreach on innovative research, agriculture and natural resource issues. For more information please visit http://animalrange.montana.edu/bairranchfoundation.html.

After the meeting concluded members were able to participate in a wagon ride. A huge thank you to the Huttinga's for their hospitality and for sharing their beautiful horses with us (see pictures). The next GG4H field trip is a club team building workshop with horses that will be held Sunday Feb. 16th at Cedar Ridge Equine at 1:30pm. Prior to field trip there will be a brief club officer training at 1pm. The next scheduled GG4H Meeting will be held on Monday Feb. 17th 6pm, at MSU Animal Bioscience Building.

Hello Gallatin Gallopers!
Just a reminder that the GG4H Field Trip wagon ride is scheduled for Sat. January 25th at Dick Huttinga's place in Gallatin Gateway. We will meet at 3pm in his shop, for club members we will host a short meeting with updates and then proceed to the wagon just after the meeting. My estimate would be about 3:45pm. I will be sending out more details (email) (address, meeting agenda) as the date gets closer. I did attach a screenshot and google map pinned location to this email. We will not have a meeting at MSU Mon. January 20th, as it is a holiday and we have had issues in the past accessing the MSU building. I will also be in touch with upcoming Feb. team building field trip details, it will be held at my facility Cedar Ridge Equine. We will plan to have our normally scheduled February meeting at MSU on the 17th (also a holiday) at 6pm.

Please let me know if you have any questions in the in between time.

Sincerely,

Amy Prechter

Hello Gallatin Gallopers,

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am working on the GG4H Club and Project Holiday Meeting/Party/Potluck Details.

Date: Monday 12/16/19
Location: See email for details
Time: 5:30-8pm (We will eat first)
Please RSVP to me by 12/13 so I can get a head count and make sure we have enough supplies.

Activities:
Potluck (please sign up at this link) https://www.PerfectPotluck.com/LBAH7254
(My guess is that we will have 30-40 members/guests) Parents/Siblings welcome to attend.
There is a sign up for graham crackers and frosting. If anyone would be willing to pre-build these and make card board bases that would be super helpful. We will only need 4-5 houses pre-built, as we will split everyone into teams for decorating. If you are unable to prep houses, if the supplies can be dropped off to me (graham crackers and white frosting) I will either make them or get them to whoever is willing to build!

If you would like to participate in gift exchange, please bring a horsey themed wrapped gift for under $10.00

If anyone has any other games they would like to bring, please let me know what you have/ideas.

I need a volunteer that would be willing to provide Christmas music. Need to be able to turn off/on for musical chair gift exchange. Last year all we had were cell phones and it wasn't quite loud enough.

I will also need a few of you to committ to setting up and taking down.

Please let me know if you have any questions or ideas! Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Sincerely,

Good Evening,
Just a quick reminder that there is a scheduled meeting for Monday November 18th at 6pm, MSU. See attached meeting agenda on email. At this meeting we will be hosting club officer elections, so if you plan to run for an officer position please make sure to come prepared with a short 3-5 minute speech explaining why you would like to become a GG4H officer. I have attached to email, a list of club officer expectations to this email as well. Please bring your project books if you have them, as we may have an opportunity for a quick presentation at end of meeting and/or question answer on project and/or record books. I have also attached to email club stipend forms for any of you that have not completed one for riding lessons or need the individual stipend event for other equine event of your choice you wish to receive a stipend for.
Please make sure to mark your calendars for upcoming field trip Monday Nov. 25th at 6pm, MSU. We will have a tour of the equine labs led by Dr. Tammi Parrot, she will also be going over equine anatomy. Please make sure to bring your project book to the field trip.
For those of you that are just joining the club, I have attached to email a brief overview/welcome letter, that will hopefully clarify some of the questions you might have. Not to worry it may seem overwhelming at first, but we are here to help and answer any questions you might have.
Please come to meeting with ideas for the upcoming holiday party as well as any ideas/suggestions for upcoming club field trips. I apologize if you received duplicate emails, my list is not yet finalized for new 4H year.
Sincerely,

Amy Prechter
