What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, meaning “The Science of Life,” originated in India over 5,000 years ago and is considered the oldest surviving healing system in the world. Rooted in the ancient Vedic texts, it offers a holistic approach to health grounded in the understanding that body, mind, and spirit are inseparable.

According to Ayurvedic philosophy, all of nature—including the human body—is composed of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. Each of us carries a unique balance of these elements. When that balance is disturbed, discomfort and disease can arise.

The goal of Ayurveda is prevention and the cultivation of the body’s own innate capacity for balance. Through conscious daily rhythm, nourishing food, herbal support, yoga, meditation, bodywork, and cleansing practices, Ayurveda supports the whole person in returning to harmony.

Often called the sister science to yoga, Ayurveda tends to the health of the body while yoga refines and steadies the mind—together offering a complete path toward greater ease and awareness.
