Twice world bantamweight champion Pete ‘Kid’ Herman was born Peter Gulotta in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1896.

Herman, who was elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1959, first won the bantamweight title here from Kid Williams in a 20-round fight in 1917.

He lost the crown three years later to Joe Lynch in New York's old Madison Square Garden but regained it the next year defeating Lynch in Brooklyn in a 15-round rematch. He lost the championship for good, two months later, to Johnny Buff.

He famously knocked out legendary flyweight king Jimmy Wilde in seventeen rounds at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1921.

Herman's last fight was in 1922, when he whipped Roy Moore in a 10-rounder in Boston. Failing eyesight forced his retirement. He was soon completely blind and opened a nightclub in New Orleans

On April 13, 1973, Herman died in a New Orleans hospital after failing health and a fall that broke his hip the previous month. He was 77 years old.
