If “I don’t care” has become your go-to answer lately, let’s talk about what that can actually mean.
How Do You Feel? Part 24: Indifferent ☸️😑
The context behind feeling indifferent changes the meaning. Indifference can be seen as a neutral response that carries no charge (positive or negative). Examples of this type of detachment or neutrality could be not engaging in drama, or acceptance of whatever the outcome of something may be without attaching to it. It’s you recognizing that not everything requires your emotional investment, and is a healthy response to indifference.
Conversely, indifference in the form of apathy can be a sign of something deeper. This type of indifference could look like losing interest or pleasure in things (or people) that once mattered to you, and when your inner dialogue is repeatedly telling you ‘I don’t care” and you feel emotionally numb. This form of indifference is more common during burnout, depression, avoidance, unprocessed grief and/or trauma.
