What St. Patrick’s Day Means to Me—And the History We Don’t Talk About

As a pagan of Celtic descent, St. Patrick’s Day feels… complicated for me.

Saint Patrick is remembered as the patron saint of Ireland—a Christian missionary credited with helping convert the Irish people in the 5th century. Most of us grew up hearing the story that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland.

But Ireland never had snakes.

The ā€œsnakesā€ are widely understood to represent the indigenous Celtic spiritual traditions of the land—Druidic, earth-based practices that existed long before Christianity arrived.

So this story isn’t really about animals. It reflects the gradual replacement of an existing belief system.

And that didn’t happen overnight.

The Druids didn’t just vanish. The Roman Empire had already disrupted Celtic systems in surrounding regions, weakening traditional structures and spiritual leadership.

Then Christianity spread and filled that space—not always through violence in Ireland, but through influence, conversion, and slow cultural change over generations.

Somewhere in the middle of all of that, an entire spiritual tradition was pushed to the margins—and often absorbed.

We still see echoes of it. The goddess Brigid became Saint Brigid. Sacred wells were rededicated. Seasonal festivals continued under new names.

Even deeper symbolism remained. Cycles, seasons, and sacred triads were reframed within a new structure.

And it didn’t stop there.

The Celtic peoples of the British Isles weren’t erased, but they were suppressed, displaced, and stripped of language, land, and autonomy under British rule.

For hundreds of years, those traditions and languages declined and were nearly lost.

The culture survived—but not untouched.

So when I see St. Patrick’s Day, I don’t just see celebration. I see a story that highlights what came after without fully acknowledging what came before.

We can celebrate Irish culture while still being honest about its full history.

Because not all erasure happens with a sword. Sometimes, it happens quietly… through replacement.

šŸšØā„ļø My weather app is currently estimating over 10ā€ of snow starting in the late evening Saturday throughout Sunday, so I’m most likely going to be closed on Sunday.
Saturday looks okay so far, so I plan to be there tomorrow 12-4 as usual at this point, but will definitely keep y’all posted if that changes at all!

Stay safe, friends!

I’m definitely skipping ahead here, but this is giving Ta**us season for sure! 🄲Isn’t she so cute?! ā˜ŗļø Only 2 available ...
