Ok, let’s talk due dates. A hot topic! How are they determined, what do they really mean?
The current formula is old and based on a very small study. Most of you probably know we are counting from your last menstrual period. This becomes inaccurate on many occasions because women aren’t the same!
If you have found a good professional, they have listened to the unique qualities of your cycle and come up with an estimate. And that, dear friends , is all it is.
The best modern prediction of due dates is an ultrasound done between 11-14 weeks. How many of were told this?
Now, let’s look a a few numbers-when do most babies arrive? The worldwide average for first time moms is 41 weeks and 2 days. The average for second babies and beyond is 40 weeks and 5 days. And, for most of us, the “due date” is just an educated guess.
Induction is prolific in our modern culture, and we have very little evidence that elective induction lowers risk. Induction will almost certainly be much longer and more difficult than spontaneous labor. And, a LOT more expensive.
Do your research. If you are told there is a true medical reason for induction, thank God it is available. Ask questions. Do your research. Your baby is counting on you!
The cutie pies above? My oldest was born spontaneously at 41 weeks, very healthy. My second at about 40 weeks and 2 days, after membrane stripping and 4 days of prodromal labor. Baby sister, not pictured, spontaneously at 41 weeks. Only the middle one had any difficulty at birth.
