As the weather warms and we spend more time outdoors, ticks become active—and so does the risk of tick-borne illness.
What to do if you find a tick:
• Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible
• Pull upward with steady, even pressure (avoid twisting or crushing)
• Clean the area with soap and water or alcohol after removal
• Avoid folklore remedies like heat, petroleum jelly, or essential oils
When to consider antibiotic prophylaxis:
A single dose of doxycycline may be appropriate if:
• The tick is identified as a deer tick (Ixodes scapularis)
• It has been attached for ≥36 hours
• It can be started within 72 hours of removal
If you’d like to have your tick tested, you can send it to: tickreport.com
As always, we’re here to help—please call the office with any questions, concerns, or if you’re unsure what to do after a tick bite.
Stay safe, check daily, and enjoy the beauty of spring 🌱
