Hannah Ruth Massage & Movement Massage therapy, yoga, dance, and performance space in downtown Brattleboro, VT For me, every massage is a dance. I use they or she pronouns.

I find this to be true both in the grace and fluidity of my movements as I work, and in the presence of deep listening that I enter into as I practice my craft. To every session, I bring generous attention to the feedback your body gives, both verbally and non verbally. I don’t believe in overriding your body’s pain response with excessively deep strokes in a “no pain, no gain” mentality. Instead, I seek to communicate directly with you in a dance of give and take, to find the sweet spot that leaves you feeling refreshed, deeply relaxed, and at ease. I began my massage training at Santa Barbara Bodyworks in Santa Barbara, CA, in 2015. There, I completed over 600hrs of coursework and practice in Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue, Orthopedic Massage, Sports Massage, and more. In 2022 I sought additional training in Reflexology and Oncology Massage, as well as one-on-one coaching to develop my skills in Deep Tissue. In addition to seeing clients of all ages in their homes, I have enjoyed working closely with residents at the Samarkand retirement community, and with the Westmont College Track and Cross Country teams for several seasons. In 2023 I relocated back to my old college stomping grounds in Brattleboro, VT, to be closer to friends and to enjoy the beauty of the seasons. I am a Certified Massage Therapist with the state of California, and Licensed in the state of Vermont. Hannah Ruth Massage is a body positive, LGBTQ+ owned business. I welcome you to tell me yours. Today’s view from the office….

I have the honor of teaching yoga a handful of times this month and next for the dear good students of . It just so happens that they are living, studying, and meditating on the former campus of my alma mater, Marlboro College.

It’s strange, being back in the library where I spent so many late nights and hours bent over a book or laptop, studying and writing (and yes, taking naps). The place is dear to me, and yet, it feels very different. Most of the books and the shelves they rested on have vanished, leaving open space.

I think almost all of us who had the privilege of counting ourselves as members of the Marlboro community wish that the college was still there. And yet, it is not. And it most likely never will be again. For me, the path forward seems to be to treasure the meaningful connections I still have with former classmates, professors, and staff members, and express my gratitude for the ways they all helped me to learn and grow so deeply while I was a student there. Marlboro really was a college that changed lives. We must do our best to carry that energy forward.

As I come closer to the end of this two-week mental health pause, I have found myself beginning to feel ready to face the world again. Last night I ventured for the first time back to my beloved space. I was relieved to find all houseplants still alive and much happier than I feared they might be. It was like I’d never left.

I’ve been reconnecting recently with my dance bud from college, . I haven’t talked about it much yet on this page, but dance is a huge part of my history and practice and what makes me feel alive. Last night, I found myself in the studio singing, messing around, and making a little something movement-based for the first time in more than a year. What an absolute honor to have a little space to tend to, to come to, and to hold whatever I bring in.

It’s been a really tough slog these past several years, likely for most of us. We are tired, we are sad, we are angry, we are hurting. I think a lot of us are struggling just to stay alive! Something my therapist has been encouraging me to do lately is to s l o w d o w n ~ It’s like driving in the snow. Accelerate slowly and gradually to gain traction, and avoid spinning out and getting stuck.

As I’ve been slowing down this past week, I’ve noticed some sweet things ~ what my friend Rebecca calls “tiny magic”. The thing that stands out most is a ladybug and a fly of sorts playing with their own shadows on my bedroom ceiling (always thrilling to be reminded that ladybugs can fly!!!) 🐞 Our culture has become so fast paced over the past decades, that I think we are often kind of missing the point. In order to fully enjoy our time on this planet, the key is not to do more, to have more, to accomplish more, to consume more. The key is to slow down. No more pushing or forcing. Less grasping, less rushing toward a future goal. The best way I’ve found to live a good life is to settle in, take it slower, notice, receive, and appreciate. Begin to find a little softness around the edges ~ and give thanks. That way, we can be present and hold ourselves and each other through the hard times. And we can be open to the hope that things might get better. (Ending in comments)

Currently in the midst of a much-needed break for my mental health. At times like these, I remind myself of what I say to my students at the start of almost every class.

Finding a comfortable seat

Noticing any feelings in the body

Any sensations

Noticing the breath

Noticing the quality and texture of the breath

and ~

Letting go of everything that happened before

Releasing everything that might happen next

And coming into the present moment

This is such a good reminder for all of us, I think. There is so much difficulty in our world right now, and also so much to be excited about. When we remind ourselves to come back to our bodies and to the present moment, we ground ourselves in the here and now, and we are able to grapple with the truth. That we are all human. That we need ourselves. And that we need each other.
