Trust us when we say, you're not the only patient who dreads the air puff! However, checking your ocular pressure is an important part of your eye exam.
Ocular hypertension can lead to more serious complications and the initial screener, the air puff, is the fastest & least invasive way to check your ocular pressure.
There are other ways to check it though! Talk to our technicians at your next exam, & decide which method you're comfortable with so you no longer dread the air puff!

Many of our patients complain of difficulty driving when meeting a car on the road at night. The glare from oncoming headlights seems excessive. Some patients complain of glare off of roadways when it's raining. So why all the glare?
Cataracts-opacity in the lens can can cause glare or starbursts
Dry eyes- irregularities on the cornea can cause light to scatter when entering the eyes
Corneal scars- causing irregularities in the cornea (different from irregularities caused from dry eyes)
Refractive error/astigmatism-this means you likely need glasses. Astigmatism means that your cornea isn't perfectly round, and most people have some degree of astigmatism. While glasses can correct your vision for this, it doesn't change the shape of your eyes, so when light enters the eye it scatters. This is much more noticeable at night.

Presbyopia is the natural, age-related loss of the eye's ability to focus on near objects. This becomes noticeable in the early to mid 40's and worsens until around age 65.

Floaters, while sometimes a nuisance, are common especially as we age. We will always ask if you experience floaters when you come for an exam because a sudden increase in floaters, especially when accompanied by flashes of light or sudden vision changes or loss of vision, can indicate a more serious problem.

Hormone changes during pregnancy may cause changes in vision, increase dry eye symptoms, cause puffiness around the eyes, & increase light sensitivity.
In most cases, these are temporary changes & will return to normal after delivery but it's important to let Dr. Bonham know if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or have recently delivered, so that she can discuss those visual changes with you.

Annual eye exams are not only for those who need vision correction in order to see their best. At an annual eye exam, Dr. Bonham is looking at the overall health of your eyes as well. This includes monitoring for changes that could potentially lead to the development of glaucoma.
Glaucoma has a high occurrence in
⚫️ African Americans over age 40
⚫️ Anyone of any race over age 60
⚫️ Those with a family history of glaucoma
