Organized by the American Association for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (A.A.C.V.P.R.), Pulmonary Rehab Week is an annual event held starting the second Sunday of March. In 2026, it will be observed from March 8 to 14.

What is Pulmonary Rehab ?
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a medically supervised program designed to help individuals with chronic lung diseases improve their quality of life through education, exercise, and support. It is a comprehensive program aimed at individuals suffering from chronic lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and other respiratory diseases. The program typically includes a combination of exercise training, education, and support to help patients manage their symptoms and improve their overall health.

Key Components
1. Exercise Training: Tailored physical activities designed to strengthen the respiratory muscles and improve endurance. This may include walking, cycling, and strength training.

2. Education: Patients learn about their lung condition, how to manage symptoms, and techniques to improve breathing. This knowledge empowers them to take control of their health.

3. Nutritional Support: Guidance on maintaining a healthy diet to support overall health and manage weight, which is crucial for individuals with lung diseases.

4. Psychosocial Support: Addressing the emotional aspects of living with a chronic illness, including anxiety and depression, through counseling and support groups.

Who Can Benefit?
Pulmonary rehabilitation is suitable for anyone with chronic lung diseases, including those recovering from lung surgery or experiencing significant breathing difficulties. It is typically administered in outpatient settings, such as hospitals or specialized clinics, and may also be available through home-based programs.

❤️Raising Heart Disease Awareness❤️
This month we raise awareness about heart disease and support those affected! Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, but together, we can make a difference. By wearing red, we symbolize our commitment to heart health and honor those affected by heart disease. Did you know? One person dies every 33 seconds from cardiovascular disease in the United States. Let's spread the word and encourage our community to take steps towards a healthier heart.❤️

Also shoutout to Sassy Signs for putting together this awesome sign for American Heart Month!

Stephens Memorial Hospital is announcing today the retirement of Dr. William E. Prater, MD. Dr. Prater’s last day was Thursday, January 29, 2026 after more than 40 years as a physician and over 35 years of caring for his patients in Breckenridge. He has been a cornerstone of our medical community during that time and his presence will be missed!

Patients are encouraged to contact Breckenridge Medical Center to set up a seamless transition to one of our other providers including Dr. Kelli Windsor, DO; Barbara Medina, PA; Becky McIntire, FNP; and Amy Walker, FNP. If patients need a copy of their medical records, they may request them by completing a medical records request form from the Medical Center at 101 S Hartford St, Breckenridge, TX 76424 or calling 254-559-3363. In addition, we are actively recruiting physicians to move to Breckenridge and establish their practice at Breckenridge Medical Center to continue the legacy of Dr. Prater, Breckenridge Medical Center, & Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Prater earned his board-certification in Family Practice in 1985, has membership in the Texas Medical Association, and has been practicing in Breckenridge since July of 1990. He received his Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M University and completed his Doctor of Medicine Degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and his residency in Family Practice at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

Our community has been privileged to have Dr. Prater for these 35+ years as he has delivered many babies, performed multiple surgeries, and had a deep connection with all his patients, especially the elderly. He has won several People’s Choice Awards, has served as Chief of Staff, and has represented Stephens Memorial Hospital and Breckenridge Medical Center on other committees and boards.

Stephens Memorial Hospital and Breckenridge Medical Center would like to thank Dr. Prater for his dedication to our Hospital District and especially the many patients that received his care. We wish Dr. Prater the very best in his retirement!
