Today is international IBCLC Day and Iā€™m feeling proud of the work I do while also feeling frustrated that it often doesnā€™t seem like ā€œenoughā€.

But having been a mother who needed breastfeeding support and not getting it, I have been determined to do better for the next mother.

The IBLCE (the credentialing organization) should strive to do better also. Their lack of protection for the profession is frustrating. The confusing and prohibitive pathways to certification keep the credential exclusive while maintaining the lowest level of quality.

I believe we can do better as a profession and we have an obligation to be more inclusive. Representation matters.

I believe in helping the next generation of lactation professionals and that there is room at the table for all levels of supporters. Each brings a unique perspective and skill set to the families we serve.

I am happy to celebrate IBCLC day today and will continue to learn and grow as a professional in order to do better for my community.

Knowing that Iā€™m doing ā€œenoughā€ for one person at a time is what keeps me going.

I have big plans for Summit Lactation and I canā€™t wait to share them with you throughout the month.
