The corn-based industrial sweetener known as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is the number one source of dietary calories in America.

Some researchers claim that it is among the most dangerous and damaging food additive ever created.

This ingredient is used to sweeten almost everything including:

Soda
Cookies
Soups
Yogurt
Salad dressings
Bread
Cereal
Iced tea
Ketchup
Bacon
Peanut butter
Mustard
Beer
Health bars

The food industry loves HFCS because it is cheap, easy to transport and store.

HFCS has been shown to interfere with a key enzyme that delivers copper to all the vital organs in the body-especially the liver (leading to inflammation and cirrhosis).

It has been associated with the sharp rise in both obesity and diabetes- due to the fact that HFCS is metabolized into fat faster than any other type of sugar.

My advice?

Read your food labels carefully and avoid this ingredient like the plague!

Many of us experience a reaction to food at one time or another in our lives.

Whether it is a food allergy, a food sensitivity or a food intolerance, our bodies respond by creating inflammation.

This inflammation likes to attack our bodies weakest points and can show up as a variety of different symptoms.

For some, it shows up as allergies, runny nose and itchy eyes.

For others it can be digestive issues like gas, bloating and abdominal pain.

And for some, it can be joint pain, headaches and skin issues like rashes and acne.

No matter what your symptom are, this is your bodies attempt to let you know that you are responding negatively to a certain food.

If you experience symptoms are eating, removing inflammatory foods is a great place to start.

The most common inflammatory foods include:

🍞Gluten

🥛Dairy

🍭Sugar

🍺Alcohol

☣️Food Additives

🛢️Vegetable Oils

It’s not what you eat- it’s what your food ate.

What it was exposed to.

The air it breathed.

The soil it was raised on.

Each year, America produces 35 million pounds of antibiotics. 29 million pounds (85%) goes to livestock that American’s directly consume.

Overuse of antibiotics is a strategy used by the meat industry to offset heightened disease risks in feedlots, where livestock are routinely fed antibiotics to prevent disease whether or not they are ill, a practice that the World Health Organization discourages and that the European Union will no longer allow starting in 2022.

When antibiotics become overused, they end up becoming less effective for both humans and animals.

This is because bacteria that are frequently exposed to antibiotics develop a resistance to them.

Resistant bacteria can be passed from food-producing animals to humans in a variety of ways.

Once spread to humans, resistant bacteria can stay in the human gut and spread between individuals.

The consequences of consuming resistant bacteria include:

👉Infections that would not have happened otherwise

👉Increased severity of infections, often including vomiting and diarrhea

👉Difficulty in treating infections and higher chances that treatment will fail

This is why it is important to consume meat that is raised outside of conventional feedlots and on open pastures where they have access to grass, sunlight, clean soil and exposure to minimal antibiotics.

Remember- you are not what you eat, but what your food ate.

Grilling is an American pastime.

Each Labor Day Weekend, an estimated 64 percent of American’s fire up their grill and throw some meat on it.

But did you know that consuming grilled meats on a regular basis carries potential cancer risks?

When meat combines with heat from the grill, carcinogenic compounds known as heterocyclic amines, or HCS’s are formed.

HCA’s are associated with an increased cancer risk.

The longer you cook the meat, the more HCA’s are produced.

Charred meat is a classic sign that a large amount of HCA’s has developed.

Fortunately, there are grilling strategies that you can implement to reduce your cancer risk.

-Cut meat into smaller portion sizes so they can cook quickly and have a shorter time of exposure to the high cooking temperatures.

-Selecting leaner meats with less fat reduces the number of flames and smoke containing harmful hydrocarbons.

-Flip the meat frequently. Fewer HCA’s are formed if you turn meat over frequently while grilling.

-Marinating your meat for at least 30 minutes before grilling helps decrease the amount of HCA’s by creating a barrier between the meat and the flames and smoke.

-Watch the temperature- the higher the temperature, the higher the risk of HCA formation.

-Pick hardwoods over softwoods. The type of wood you use can influence HCA formation. Hardwoods, like hickory and maple, burn at a lower temperature than softwoods, such as pine.

-As always, do your best to choose healthy grass-fed, pasture-raised and organic meats.

What happens in the gut doesn’t stay in the gut.

The health of our gut effects every other system in the body.

⁉️Did you know that 70-80 percent of your immune system is located in the gut and helps protect us from colds, flus and viruses?

⁉️Did you know that 90 percent of serotonin and up to 50 percent of dopamine are made in the gut and can affect conditions like depression and anxiety?

⁉️Did you know that people with neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s actually show signs of degeneration in their gut 10-20 years before they show signs in the brain?

⁉️Did you know our gut serves as a protective barrier to keep unwanted food particles out of circulation which can help prevent joint pain, skin issues, chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases?

⁉️Did you know that the balance of bacteria in our gut is connected to certain diseases like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease?

⁉️Did you know that 20-30 percent of our thyroid hormones are processed in the gut and when our bacteria balance is off, it can contribute to thyroid disease?

⁉️Did you know that the balance of bacteria in the gut can affect reproductive and fertility health in both males and females?

Plain and simple- if you gut is not heathy, you are not healthy.

If you suffer from any health condition, get your gut tested!

Let us help! Give my office a call today to see how we can help you get to the root cause of your health issues once and for all.

Optimizing our gut health is key to keeping our hormones in balance.

When gut health isn't optimal, hormones become imbalanced.

Gut health is so important because the microbiome has many functions, including:

👉Aids the synthesis and regulation of hormones and neurotransmitters

👉Facilitates absorption of macro and micronutrients

👉Has an essential role in the immune system

👉Contributes to regulation of estrogen levels in the body

👉Contributes to the formation of thyroid hormones

New research show that the microbiome plays a big role in estrogen regulation.

These studies indicate that poor gut health increases the risk of estrogen-related diseases such as PCOS, endometriosis, and even breast cancer.

Above are some simple tips you can do to help optimize both your gut health and your hormone health.

The United States has the worst health-care system overall among 11 high-income countries, even though it spends the highest proportion of its gross domestic product on health care.

Researchers compared the health-care systems of 11 high-income countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The measures analyzed fell under five themes: access to care, the care process, administrative efficiency, equity and health-care outcomes.

The United States was rated last overall, researchers found, ranking “well below” the average of the other countries overall and “far below” Switzerland and Canada, the two countries ranked above it.

In particular, the United States fell at the end of the pack on access to care, administrative efficiency, equity and health-care outcomes.

This study demonstrates that there has never been a more important time to make health a priority in your life.

We have the choice everyday to take health into our own hands and to not become reliant on the conventional medicine model.

Being healthy is an active choice- make it your top priority.

Leaky gut has gained quite a bit of attention lately, and for good reason.

Leaky gut, (aka increased intestinal permeability), is a digestive condition in which bacteria and toxins are able to “leak” through the intestinal wall.

Once these bacteria and toxins leak through the intestinal wall, they get into your blood stream and they start to circulate throughout the body causing wide-spread inflammation and our immune systems to become overactive.

Leaky gut is associated with a variety of conditions such as:

💥Chronic fatigue syndrome

💥Migraines

💥Multiple sclerosis

💥Fibromyalgia

💥Food sensitivities

💥Thyroid abnormalities

💥Mood swings

💥Skin conditions

💥Autism

Plain and simple: leaky gut is a biological doorway to a variety of diseases.

If you suspect that leaky gut is contributing to your symptoms, give my office a call today to see how we can help you!
