ByHeart Formula Recall: What Parents Need to Know
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Health officials have been investigating cases of infant botulism possibly linked to ByHeart formula. There are 15 infants in 12 states that have been diagnosed with infant botulism who were fed this formula. At this time, the source of contamination is unconfirmed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
ByHeart has recalled all of their infant formula. If you have any of their formula, immediately stop giving it to your baby! You can switch to a different type of formula with similar components. Please clean and sanitize all items and surfaces that may have touched the formula with hot soapy water or by using the dishwasher.

When should I be worried that my baby possibly has botulism?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Signs and symptoms of infant botulism include constipation (the usual first sign), weak sucking and difficulty feeding, droopy eyelids, weak cry, decreased facial movement, difficulty swallowing, loss of head control, and floppy arms and legs. These symptoms can take weeks to develop and worsen over time. If your baby is displaying any of these signs, please call your pediatrician!

Halloween is so much fun, but it is important to be safe! When trick-or-treating, make sure a parent is going with younger children, and older children are walking in a group. Always check before crossing the street, especially when it’s dark! 🎃 👻
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Make sure to look through all the treats! Throw away any candy that has been opened. Be aware of any choking hazards: babies and toddler should not have hard or gummy candies, anything with whole nuts, or anything sticky like caramels. Ration candy for the next couple of days and weeks; too much candy can cause a stomach ache! 🍭🍫🍬

Is my baby ready to start solids? 👶🏻 🍽️

We recommend starting solids when your baby is sitting upright, unsupported in a tripod position. This usually occurs at 5-6 months old.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How do I introduce common allergens? 🥜 🍳 🦐 🥛 🌾 🐟
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We recommend introducing common allergen foods (nuts, eggs, dairy, wheat, sesame, soy, fish, and shellfish) as soon as babies start solids. This can help reduce the risk of future allergies! With any new foods, monitor for signs of an allergic reaction: rash/hives, swelling, wheezing, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, trouble swallowing, or excessive crying. With any concerns, please call our office or call 911 in an emergency.

The flu vaccine is recommended annually to children older than 6 months to prevent the flu as well as lessen the severity of symptoms if you still get the flu. The flu vaccine reduces the risk of complications including pneumonia, dehydration, and ear infections.

Babies who are getting their first flu vaccine require 2 doses one month apart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We will have 5 flu vaccine clinics (see the second photo for dates). Only the injection will be available at these flu clinics. Flu vaccines are also available during regular clinic hours.

Our new pediatrician, Dr. Aly Crain, starts tomorrow (July 28th)! We’re excited to add her to the team. Please join us in welcoming her!! 🤩

Dr. Aly Crain is originally from Houston, Texas, but has been in Nashville for the last three years completing her pediatric residency at Vanderbilt. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts with a degree in Math and Chemistry. She returned to her hometown to attend medical school at McGovern Medical School at University of Texas Houston where she was a member of the Gold Humanism Honors Society.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During baseball season, she loves cheering on the Houston Astros, especially with her cat Tuve (named after Astros player Jose Altuve). Her hobbies include running and baking, and she enjoys trying new recipes to share with her friends and coworkers.
