🔍 Word Watch Wednesday: PHONEMES 🔍
What’s a phoneme? It’s the smallest unit of sound in spoken language—and it plays a huge role in reading success.
Dr. Louisa Moats reminds us in her book Speech to Print:
“We should focus on phonemes because one of the most robust findings of modern reading research is that proficient reading and spelling are strongly associated with the ability to identify, remember, separate, combine, and manipulate phonemes—and to do so rapidly without effort.”
💡 When students build strong phonemic awareness, they unlock the door to decoding, spelling, and reading fluently.
