Charles Richard McClure, 90 years and nine months young, of Bridgeport died Thursday January 8, 2026, at the Village at Heritage Point in Morgantown, West Virginia, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 8, 1935, the son of the late C.W. Luther McClure and Alta Marie (Cale) McClure of Masontown, West Virginia.

Richard was a 1953 graduate of Masontown High School where he was class Valedictorian, President of the Student Body, attended Boys State and represented WV as Boys Nation senator. While his football career ended with a broken ankle, he was a very gifted musician from a young age. He often lended his beautiful tenor voice and played the piano at church services or entertained the student body –“Boogie Woogie” style in those days.

A first-generation college student, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from West Virginia University in 1957 with his Bachelor of Music Degree and was a proud member of the WVU Pride Marching Band which include travel by train to New Orleans to perform at the 1954 Sugar Bowl. He enlisted with the West Virginia National Guard 197th Tank Battalion and later transferred to the 249th Army Band where he continued with over 15 years of service. From that time on he stayed connected with members of the Pride and would gather with the 249th alumni members monthly for fellowship and breakfast.

Following graduation from WVU, Richard began teaching at Tunnelton and Fellowsville High Schools while pursuing his Master’s degree at night and summer courses. In 1960 he received his MA in Education Supervision & Administration from West Virginia University and became reacquainted with fellow WVU undergraduate Shirley Pat Tallman who was teaching in Mount Lebanon, PA School System and completing her master’s too. This time when they reconnected at WVU in front of Woodburn Hall, sparks flew. After a few coffees and dinner dates, they began dating and on July 11, 1964, they married.

An accomplished Educator, leader, and loyal Mountaineer, Richard served as Superintendent of Harrison County Schools from 1974 -1980, after serving in a variety of administrative and teaching roles including Band Director and time with the State Department of Education. At the time, he was the youngest to serve in this role leading the second largest county school system in West Virginia. Under his leadership, the county school system prospered and notably grew with the building of Lincoln High School and U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance at the dedication. A community steward and leader, he belonged to a number of service organizations including National Association of School Superintendents where he was a member of the singing school superintendents, the Rotary, Lions Club, National Education Association and the West Virgina Education Association to name a few. He led multiple United Way Campaigns over time and was a lifetime member of the West Virgina Alumni Association and The Emeritus Club. For over 60 years he was a Master Mason in Kingwood Preston Lodge 90 and Good Hope Jackson Lodge 35 and continued Scottish Rite in Morgantown and Clarksburg thirty second degree. He was also a member of Osirus Shriners Fraternal organization in Wheeling.

His calling as a lifelong educator was evident in all that he did and he was known for being an incredible mentor and sponsor to many. He was a joyful human who made new friends every day of his life and never knew a stranger. He valued everyone and their perspectives and talents and believed that education and what we learned from each other while in school broadened horizons and prepared all to be better humans and contributing members of society. He often said music was the universal language. The many lives he touched and dreams he supported know his motto “Do Your best and forget the rest.”

He placed God first and his greatest love was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, son, uncle, grandfather and father -in-law who enjoyed life and adored his loving wife of 57 years with whom he often performed piano duets while spending time with family. Mr. McClure was a member of the Bridgeport United Methodist Church where he sang in the church choir.

Harriet June (Jones) Ferree
Harrison & Wyoming Counties, West Virginia
Harriet June (Jones) Ferree, 98, of Harrison County, West Virginia, passed away at United Hospital Center after a sudden illness. She met her passing with the same strength and dignity that defined her life.
Born in Big Isaac, June later moved with her family to East View, near Clarksburg, where she was educated and began forging her own path. She started her professional career at C&P Telephone Company in Clarksburg as an operator, eventually rising to office manager. She supervised ten employees—an uncommon and forward-looking achievement for women of her time. June was known for her professionalism, independence, and confidence, always taking pride in her work, her appearance, and her self-reliance, including owning her own new car when that was not typical for women.
After marrying Denzil H. Ferree, who worked for Consolidated Natural Gas, June made the deliberate and wholehearted decision to leave the workforce and devote herself to her roles as homemaker and mother. This calling would become her true legacy, and she carried it out with purpose, pride, and grace.
June and Denzil raised their family in Pineville, West Virginia. Their home was open to all—neighbors and friends were always welcome for meals, snacks, a cool glass of iced tea or a cup of coffee. June fostered an atmosphere of warmth and respect, encouraging laughter and kindness. Evenings often found her visiting with friends in the garage, where conversation and stories lasted until the sun set beyond the Pineville High School football field. She loved quick wit and friendly jokes, always gently reminding youngsters to keep things good-natured.
June was a steadfast supporter of her sons and their teammates at every school and athletic event, cheering from packed gymnasiums, braving the bleachers on chilly evenings, and traveling far and wide for playoff games. She followed not only her children, but all their friends, taking pride in the young people they became.
In later years, June and Denzil returned to Harrison County, where they made their home at both Lake Floyd and the family home in East View. They also enjoyed spending time at the family farm in Wirt County, creating lasting memories together. June cherished time with her grandchildren, attending their games and milestones—regardless of the weather—and especially treasured moments spent with her great-granddaughters, Madeliene and Nathalie. Though never seeking the spotlight, June was known and respected by many. She was content and proud of the life she chose.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David Leonard Jones and Olive Ura Jones; her husband, Denzil H. Ferree; and her siblings.
She is survived by her sons, Mark H. Ferree of Clarksburg, and Allen R. Ferree and his wife Marla, of Harrison County; two grandsons, Seth (Abigail) and Matthew (LeeAnn); her great-granddaughters, Madeliene and Nathalie; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a celebration of June’s life on Sunday, January 25, from 3–5 p.m. at the Bridgeport Conference Center.
June will be lovingly remembered for her warmth, her devotion to family and friends, and her enduring spirit.
