True acceptance isn’t about how we present ourselves, but about being valued for who we really are.
When we feel seen and appreciated for our authentic selves, connection deepens and healing begins. Pretending to be what others expect may earn approval, but it rarely builds genuine belonging.
Real growth starts when we allow ourselves and others to show up honestly.

When we live without meaningful connection, our bodies stay on high alert. Without the safety that comes from trusted relationships, our nervous system struggles to relax and our capacity to heal is limited. Connection is not just emotional, it is biological. Our bodies are wired to feel safe together.

Just spoke at 𝗡𝗔𝗔𝗗𝗔𝗖 about one of the most overlooked challenges veterans face: the transition itself. Leaving military service can bring about new threats, as many veterans struggle to adapt to civilian life and find renewed purpose. The structure, identity, and sense of mission that defined military life can be difficult to replace, and without that foundation, many veterans feel lost or disconnected.
Supporting 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀 through this critical period means helping them rediscover meaning, connection, and belonging beyond the uniform. When we create spaces that honor their experiences and guide them toward new purpose, we empower them to thrive in their next chapter.
If you work with veterans as a mental health professional or treatment provider, this message is for you.
Veterans are at least 𝟮𝟬𝟬% 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 to experience mental health challenges or struggle with addiction. As a retired Marine Corps pilot and recovery advocate, I’ve lived that reality and now I dedicate my work to helping professionals better understand and support those who have served.
On 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟲𝘁𝗵, I’ll be partnering with 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 to deliver 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗡𝗔𝗔𝗗𝗔𝗖-𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 designed to shed light on the unique factors that impact the veteran population.
We’ll explore the deeper influences behind these challenges and discuss practical ways to create more effective support for veterans in recovery and mental health care.
Have you ever noticed how you can feel someone’s energy before they even speak?
If a person walks into the room angry or upset, we can sense that tension. The same way, when someone radiates calm or love, we feel that too.
This was something I spoke about during my recent appearance at NAADAC. It’s a reminder of how deeply connected we are, emotionally and physiologically. Our presence impacts others, and theirs impacts us.
When we bring awareness to this, we can choose to create spaces of calm, compassion, and safety for those around us.

Our suffering often stems from deeper unmet needs, the essential human needs for connection, authenticity, and meaning.
When those needs go unfulfilled, we can feel lost or disconnected, even when everything seems fine on the surface. Healing begins when we recognize these needs and seek genuine relationships, self-acceptance, and purpose.
For many veterans, rediscovering these connections can be the turning point toward hope and recovery.

“A true warrior doesn’t go into battle because they hate what’s in front of them, but because of how much they love what’s behind them.”
The greatest battles are not fought out of anger or hatred but from love and purpose. For many veterans, that love was for the people and the country they served. It gave meaning to every challenge, every sacrifice, and every hardship faced in uniform.
But when the uniform comes off, many struggle to find that same sense of purpose and love to fight for. That loss of meaning can leave a void that’s hard to fill. Reconnecting with a new mission and rediscovering what we love behind us can reignite the courage to move forward.
Arrived in 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 and excited to share with hundreds of addiction professionals at the 𝗡𝗔𝗔𝗗𝗔𝗖 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 today. I’ll be leading a session on 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, exploring how we can better support Veterans in recovery by promoting resilience and posttraumatic growth.
Honored to be part of this incredible event and conversation about helping Veterans not only heal but truly thrive after service.

The human needs for connection, authenticity, and meaning are at the core of why so many veterans suffer when they leave the military.
When service ends, many veterans lose more than a job or a uniform. They lose a sense of belonging, purpose, and identity. The deep bonds, shared mission, and clear sense of direction that defined their service can be difficult to find again in civilian life.
This 𝗧𝗘𝗗𝘅 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 explores how that loss impacts veterans and what it takes to rebuild a fulfilling life after service.
I recently rewatched this 𝗧𝗘𝗗𝘅 talk (link below) and was reminded how identity, purpose, and belonging are deeply tied to the roles we carry and what happens when those roles disappear.
For many veterans, taking off that uniform is not just shedding fabric. It is losing a compass. Who are you when the mission ends? What drives you when your structure is gone?
We owe it to our veterans and to ourselves to remember that identity is more than a title. We are more than what we wear or where we serve.
Veterans carry unique challenges after service, but trauma does not have to define the rest of their story.
Join me at 𝗔𝗣𝗡𝗖 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 on October 28 at 3:45 PM ET for an interactive breakout session exploring how Post-Traumatic Growth can be fostered as a framework for recovery. Drawing from the Veteran Wellness Empowerment & Resilience Training (V-WERT) curriculum, this session introduces practical tools like the CAM Model Connection, Authenticity, and Meaning, to support veterans and others impacted by substance use.
Designed for clinicians, peer specialists, and SUD/OUD professionals, this training offers strategies to reframe trauma, rebuild identity, and restore hope.

Veterans face unique challenges during transition that can increase the risk of substance use, mental health struggles, and suicidality. Providers who understand these cultural dynamics can dramatically improve outcomes.
