For many dialysis patients, receiving treatments at home is their ideal choice. If you are interested in home dialysis, it’s very important that you learn how to take care of your dialysis access as it ensures that you can continue receiving your lifesaving treatments without any interruptions.

There are three types of home hemodialysis: conventional home hemodialysis, short daily home hemodialysis, and nocturnal home hemodialysis.

Conventional home hemodialysis can be time-consuming; like in-center dialysis, treatments are typically performed three times a week and take several hours to complete.

Short daily home hemodialysis is performed five to seven times a week for roughly two hours at a time.

Nocturnal home hemodialysis also takes several hours to complete a few times a week, however, the treatments are performed while you are sleeping.

Continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis uses a machine to cycle dialysis solution into and out of your body for 10-12 hours each night while you sleep. Some people find it inconvenient to have to be connected to their CCPD machine that long.

Your medical team can help you choose the best type of dialysis for you and your needs. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them below or shoot us a DM! ⬇️

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month - approximately 1 in 3 adults with diabetes also have chronic kidney disease.

If you have diabetes, you should talk to your doctor about CKD as both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can lead to kidney disease.

If you have diabetes, it’s important to get your kidneys checked regularly. This can be done by your doctor with simple blood and urine tests. Regular testing is your best chance for identifying CKD early if you do develop it. Early treatment is most effective and can help prevent additional health problems.

Today is National Check Your Blood Pressure Day! 🩸

Your blood pressure should be checked at least once a year and more often if not controlled well, if you haven’t checked it yet this year - today is the perfect day to catch up! 😊We recommend that you monitor your blood pressure at home on a routine basis in addition to seeing your doctor.

High Blood Pressure, also known as hypertension, occurs when the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries increases. Kidney disease may cause you to have High Blood Pressure but more often hypertension causes kidney disease.

Over time, the stress that is added to the working units of the kidney, or nephrons, becomes damaged, leading to kidney failure.

Hypertension is the second leading cause of kidney failure in the United States. By controlling your blood pressure, you can decrease the chances of kidney disease and other complications.

Symptoms of hypertension:
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Shortness of breath

For people with CKD, some candies can be too high in phosphorus, potassium, or sodium. For people who have diabetes and CKD, the approach to candy may be a little different. People with diabetes and CKD may be asked to avoid the amount of candy they consume in order to help control their blood sugar levels. 🍭

Many popular candies contain chocolate and nuts, both of which contain phosphorus and potassium.
In order to find out which candies are acceptable, check the nutrition label on the candy’s packaging to make sure it’s low in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus. 🍫

People with CKD are generally told to limit dairy products such as coffee creamer as it’s high phosphorus content can weaken bones and cause an array of other complications.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, “Dialysis patients should limit their dairy intake to ½ cup of milk.”

As you may or may not know, you can still enjoy your daily cup of coffee while still following a kidney-friendly diet! Like anything, creamers vary in nutrients and additives they contain.

Coffee creamers can add phosphorus and potassium. This is why it’s important to look at the Nutrition Facts Label.

Examples of Coffee Creamers without Potassium/Phosphorus Additives include:
• Coffee Mate Natural Bliss Vanilla Creamer
• Coffee Mate Natural Bliss Vanilla Almond Milk Creamer
• Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Flavored Creamer
• Starbucks Cinnamon Dolce Flavored Creamer
• Silk Dairy Free Half & Half Alternative

FALSE - After your access has been placed, you should check your access area daily for various signs of infection. If you notice anything strange about your access, you should notify your doctor immediately.

Signs of access infections include:
• Pus draining from the access
• Red streaks near the access or surrounding area
• Red, inflamed skin
• Swelling, warmth, or increased pain
• Fever

Additionally, sometimes an access can become clotted, blocking the blood flow. 🩸

Both AV fistulas and AV grafts have a steady, swishing sound called a bruit. If you place your hand over a fistula or graft, you should additionally feel a vibration known as a thrill. The bruit and thrill being present are both signs that an access is working properly.

Any changes in the bruit or thrill could be a sign that your access is clotting.

Similarly, over time, a catheter may become damaged or broken. Swelling or bleeding at a catheter access site could be a sign of damage. It is important to check your catheter for cracks, discoloration, or other visible signs of damage. If any issues arise, you should contact your dialysis care team as soon as possible.

Caring for your access is one of the most important things one can do regardless of the type of access

Complications affecting your access can delay the lifesaving dialysis treatments one may need. These delays in treatment can have a significant impact on one’s health and are potentially life-threatening.
