A simple walk was the first sign something wasn’t right for Brighton resident Pat Bartels.

Years after undergoing triple bypass surgery, Pat continued to face heart challenges — including persistent chest pain and multiple procedures. But last fall, a minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) at Platte Valley Hospital helped change everything.

Led by interventional cardiologist Peter Boulous, Pat’s care plan addressed two major issues: blocked arteries and a deteriorating heart valve. After undergoing a novel drug-coated balloon angioplasty followed by the valve replacement procedure, Pat quickly began to feel the difference.

Within weeks, she took her first long walk without chest pain.

Today, Pat is back to doing what she loves — exercising, staying active, and spending time with her granddaughters.

Her advice to others: listen to your body and don’t ignore symptoms.

Welcome to Your Healthiest Life, a new podcast bringing you real conversations with trusted physicians and experts to help you live healthier, longer.

In Episode 1, colorectal surgeon Dr. Noelle Bertelson breaks down one of the most preventable cancers: colon cancer. She explains why screening starting at age 45 matters, what to expect during a colonoscopy, and the screening options available — including at-home tests.

She also talks about the rise in diagnoses among younger adults and why early detection can truly save lives.

Most importantly, the message is hopeful: when colon cancer is caught early, it’s highly treatable.

The L.O.V.E. (Living Our Values Everyday) Award recognizes caregivers who go above and beyond to make a meaningful difference for patients—and Jordan Peterson, RN, in the Emergency Room at Platte Valley Hospital, exemplifies that commitment.

A patient who came to the ER with a severe migraine shared how Jordan’s compassion completely changed their experience. During a stressful visit, Jordan treated the patient with respect and empathy, making sure they understood their options and felt in control of their care and decisions.

The patient noted that Jordan spoke in a calm, gentle, and friendly way, helping them feel cared for rather than just another patient. Her reassuring presence helped reduce their stress during an already difficult moment.

Jordan also showed kindness in the small details—when the patient asked for crackers, she thoughtfully brought crackers, water, and ginger ale, going the extra mile to ensure they were comfortable.

Through her empathy, patience, and attentiveness, Jordan helped turn a stressful ER visit into an experience where a patient felt truly seen and cared for. 💙

Caregivers from across Intermountain Health’s Front Range hospitals were proud to join community partners, leaders, and volunteers in support of the American Heart Association - Colorado and its mission to fight heart disease and stroke.

Together, the Heart of Colorado and Denver Heart Ball campaign raised more than $610,000 (and counting) to support lifesaving research, education, and prevention efforts in our community.

Thank you to the incredible organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who made the evening possible — and to everyone working every day to help people live the healthiest lives possible.

02/27/2026

February is both Black History Month and American Heart Month — a time to recognize the disproportionate impact of heart disease in Black communities and recommit to equitable care.

Black adults are 30–35% more likely to die from heart disease than white adults and experience some of the highest rates of high blood pressure. These disparities are shaped by more than biology. Delayed access to care, health literacy gaps, and historic mistrust of the healthcare system all play a role in outcomes.

At Platte Valley, we believe culturally competent care isn’t optional — it’s foundational. It starts with listening, understanding each patient’s background and goals, and building trust. From there, we tailor education and personalize treatment plans through shared decision-making.

As one of our advanced heart failure experts shared, care is not one-size-fits-all. Every patient’s journey is unique. And when we take the time to understand that journey, it can change — and even save — a life.

This month, we reflect on the work still to be done and reaffirm our commitment to partnering in health with every patient, every time. ❤️

Each month, caregivers at Platte Valley Hospital take a moment to RESET at Recess—our time to pause, learn, and recharge. 💙 This month’s focus was all about the heart.

While our teams are always trained and ready to respond in emergencies, this session was about strengthening everyday heart health and reinforcing lifesaving skills through hands-only CPR practice and practical, heart-healthy lifestyle tips. Caregivers—and even a few visitors—had the chance to refresh their knowledge and build confidence around prevention and preparedness.

Even our pet-therapy pup Selena got in on the learning. 🐾 Because caring for hearts comes in all shapes and sizes.
