At just 14 years old, Dr. Robert Massa knew he wanted to be a doctor. The dream was born from loss—the death of his best friend in 7th grade—and inspired by a personal hospital experience that turned fear into purpose.
After earning his pre-med degree from Williams College and acceptance into Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Massa faced the financial realities of medical school. The U.S. Army offered a solution—and an adventure—through a scholarship in exchange for service.
Commissioned as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Massa quickly adapted to military life: learning to salute, shoot, and serve. His residency at Brooke Army Medical Center prepared him for the unique demands of military medicine, where internists serve as everything from ICU specialists to battlefield medics.
During Operation Sea Signal at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Dr. Massa provided care to thousands of displaced individuals and troops, earning the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award.
After six years of service and a promotion to major, Dr. Massa transitioned to civilian life—eventually finding his home at Platte Valley Hospital. Today, he’s celebrated not only for his military service but also for his compassionate, patient-centered care. He was the first physician at Platte Valley to receive the Planetree Physician Champion Award, honoring his dedication to personalizing, humanizing, and demystifying healthcare.
“People don’t realize the sacrifices veterans make,” Dr. Massa shares. “It’s disruptive, demanding, and often dangerous—but it’s also deeply meaningful. Hug a veteran. Be grateful. Their sacrifices make our everyday lives possible.”
This Veterans Day, we proudly recognize Dr. Massa—and all who have served—for their courage, compassion, and commitment to care. 💙
