When your therapy session includes a special guest with paws… you know it’s going to be a good day! 🐕

For some children, interacting with a therapy dog can:

🐾 Support emotional regulation
🐾 Build social engagement
🐾 Reinforce turn-taking and listening skills

Honoring a Pioneer in Autism Advocacy 🤎

During Black History Month, we recognize leaders whose work changed lives, including Dr. Alvin Poussaint, the first Black psychiatrist to bring national attention to autism in the Black community.

Art of Autism Board Member, Dr. Angel Durr, shared Dr. Poussaint’s story in a blog detailing the intersection of autism and Black History Month. In 1972, Poussaint wrote about his experience with autistic children and the ways that black families lacked access to important resources. His work was an important first step for families to begin receiving the support and autism services they needed.

Advancements continue to be made to address disparities of autism diagnosis and treatment. For example, Black Applied Behavioral Analysts Inc. is a group working to reduce barriers for African American students, professionals, and parents in the autism community. Their work educates and increases diversity, equity and inclusion in the field of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA).

Dr. Poussaint’s advocacy helped open doors, and the work continues. We honor the leaders who paved the way and remain committed to advancing equity, access, and inclusive care in autism services.

Sensory seeking isn’t random, it’s regulation! 🧠✨

When a child is constantly moving, crashing, chewing, climbing, or pressing into things, their body may be asking for more input to feel organized and focused.

Providing safe, structured opportunities for movement and heavy work can make a big difference in attention, learning, and daily routines.

If you’re noticing sensory behaviors that impact home or school, occupational therapy can help identify practical, supportive strategies tailored to your child! 💛

🧠✨ Why Early Intervention Matters

The first few years of life represent one of the most critical windows for behavioral development. During early childhood, the brain demonstrates heightened neuroplasticity, meaning it forms and strengthens neural connections at a faster rate than at any other point in development.

Skills related to communication, emotional regulation, attention, problem-solving, and social interaction are actively developing during this time. When supportive, structured teaching strategies are introduced early, they help strengthen these emerging neural pathways while they are most adaptable.

Small gains made early often compound over time. Increased attention today can support classroom learning tomorrow. Improved flexibility now can reduce frustration later. Strengthened communication early can enhance social relationships long term.

The early years are powerful. When intervention aligns with how the developing brain learns best, progress becomes both meaningful and sustainable 💛
